Can you night hunt with thermal?
You need a license, wolf tags, and permission from IDFG and the land manager for the area you plan on hunting at night, and it's only in certain units during the winter months. You really should read the new 2021-22 wolf regulations. They'll answer all the questions you have.

Tough to explain on a deal like this.
Itll have more wavering to the pitches. If that makes any sense at all
I get what you're saying. Just wasn't sure what type of call you meant by that but I think I get it.

New on here and didn't see a dedicated wolf section. I'm just getting into wolf hunting here in idaho. I've got a couple spots picked out to start in unit 48 but was wondering if anyone had any tips on good starting points or tips. I'm gonna be west of ketchum area a ways
Are you hunting public land or private? If private I'd definitely consider setting up a bait pile.

A buddy and I are heading up to Island park area in the 2nd week of January for our first whack at wolves. We are both experienced outdoorsman but not a ton of experience hunting big game/predators. Any tips on drainages or areas where wolves have been sighted? Most recent sightings I can find for the area are a few years old.

I'm not experienced with wolf hunting but I can tell you there is a lot of snow up there right now and it's supposed to keep snowing for next week straight I believe! So be prepared for that

Same here. Everything's buried, pack hasn't made an appearance in over a month, and snow expected every day this week. We need the snowpack, but I'd be OK if it was all over 8k feet

Lots of great info on here, thanks y'all for contributing your knowledge to this thread. It's my second winter in SW Montana and I finally got out looking for wolves today, so those specific tactics you've learned over the years are super helpful. +1 on Tom Schneider and Luke Sterling, those guys are awesome. Brandon Pitcher on Youtube (@Elkmagnet on IG) is another great guy in Northern Idaho. Stay safe and good hunting!
