I apologize if this has been covered on another thread somewhere - I tried the search function and while there are numerous threads on Idaho, none specific to unit 30 that I could find.

I'm planning to hunt this area this coming fall for mule deer. It will be my first mule deer hunt... I have experience hunting blacktails here in WA... I know, big difference in terrain.

I like the fact that unit 30 has a motorized hunting restriction. I don't mind either biking or hiking into hunting, it seems like its a ban on road hunting.

Anyway, a couple questions -

How is the access? From what I can see, it seems like the east side of the unit butting up to Montana is public.

I haven't put in for vacation time yet, so when would be the best time to hit it? I'm guessing later would be better, but I'd rather defer that to the folks who are more experienced than I am.

Hunting technique? I'm used to hunting the denser forests of western WA, so you can't do much glassing outside of clearcuts.

Any other recommendations? Things I should know before I go? Starting points?

Feel free to PM - I'll be heading out solo most likely(if not solo my wife will be along).

Also, I'd be open to recommendations of nearby units if you think the hunting will be better/easier to learn for a newbie.

Thanks in advance!

I have never hunted Unit 30 but if there are restrictions on the motorized vehicles find the gated roads and you should be able to hike/mountain bike.

I'm standing in unit 29 looking across the road to unit 30 right now. Been a lot of elk Hunters up here this past 2 weeks and last year during mule deer season it was packed the first week but seem to die off the second. I spoke to two elk Hunters this morning who were getting ready for deer season unit 29 but hunted unit 30 last week and shot to nice Bulls. While there they saw some really nice mule deer but they were up high up close to the snow. The forecast is calling for a few inches of snow coming in Tuesday night that may push him down to lower lands.

Also we've been noticing this week with no moon that we're not seeing deer hardly at all in the mornings but they seem to be moving well in the evenings.
