Planning a spring bear hunt in Idaho this upcoming spring and have been pouring over all the information available to decide on what unit to hunt. Based on the harvest information from the Idaho fish and game unit 17 has an average harvest per year of 76 bears, this covers 2000 through 2012. Granted unit 10 has a higher average but this in national forest and not a wilderness area, so I think easier access plays a part in the higher average.

Was curious if anyone has hunted this unit before and what their experiences are. I have been looking at google earth and trying to isolate a good area for going in. Right now, I am thinking of going in on the Magruder Road Corridor and jumping off somewhere from the road. The nice part of about the road is the selway is on the north side and the frank is on the south so its all wilderness regardless of what direction I go. It looks like there are some quite extensive burn areas just off to the north side the Magruder corrider, somewhere around the Salmon Mountain base camp area. Another likely area I was thinking about was just to the west of the green mountain lookout.

If you have hunted this unit before do you have any tips on what time frame is best to head up, I know snow pack will play a large part in access, especially if going in on the Magruder Corridor.

Thanks for any info

I'm curious to see if you ended up hunting this area and if so how did it go?
