Hi Guys, I just moved to Idaho (From Indiana) last August but hunted Montana for elk in September last year since i had already gotten my tag prior to moving. With that said, I'm in the process of figuring out what Zone in Idaho I'm going to hunt and what unit (didnt draw a controlled hunt tag). I backpack a lot and have been out to a particular spot a couple of times since May scouting around for elk and sign, which I have found some but not the amounts I have seen in spots in Montana when I have hunted there the past 3 years. This particular spot is over the top of a ridge that is 7.5 miles from the trail head, a nice hump with a pack and some good elevation gain...trying to get into an area where people don't go in the archery season. My wife and I logged 17 miles a couple weekends ago getting into and searching around. Although this spot is in the mccall zone, this spot is 109 miles from boise and takes a little over 4 hours to get to if that tells you how it's off the beaten path on dirt roads...
Basically, I'm looking for 2 or 3 other areas to check out that are off the beaten path like this. Obviously if you have your unit and spot and stuff I'm not looking to have you tell me, but perhaps there's guys who have hunted Idaho archery september in the past and not hunting this year that have gotten into good numbers and sign that might point me to a region of a unit or something to check out?? I love getting out and just racking up miles on the weekends so I will definitely work for it and use the quads God gave me..Does anyone have any advice?
thanks a ton in advance!
