Idaho NR general tag going to draw?

Is there anything for putting this in landowner appreciation tags at all? Pretty dumb I can’t hunt my own ground. I get it, not a resident. Been having to drive up there, not that big of a deal, to get a tag. But this last year was ridiculous. I wish I could just move there.

If there going to do this make it a little painful I say raise it to $200.I’ve seen more changes than 99% elk hunting Idaho. Thankfully I hunt crappy areas for most peeps.

I hope you’re right. I feel it might get worse because with the current system a ton of NR end up with tags that weren’t their first or second choice, thus more inclined to return that tag later. Just a guess tho, who knows.

Majority of your second tag options are coming from returned outfitter tags, not from NR.

Fish and Game Commission approves drawing for 2026 nonresident deer/elk tags

Nonresident hunters will apply for a drawing for 2026 deer/elk tags, and they can submit their applications in early December, and results will be posted by early January.

How expensive will outfitters tags be in the better zones if they are stuck to only their allocated tags? Or did they raise the number they give to outfitters?

A similar questions was asked when Idaho raised the price of NR tags....didn't make a lick of difference.

I like the fact that they are requiring the purchase of a tag to put in for the draw. Arizona and Nevada do the same. Heck, I ponied up $80 just to get pref points in CO for a couple years. And, I gladly make my donation to WGFD every year, too.

What it's really going to do is make Idaho a pile of money.

There are 12,500 (roughly) NR elk tags. Let's say 22,500 people put in. That's 10,000 licenses sold without a tag to go with it. Works out to ~$1,800,000 in revenue from licenses that weren't on the books previously. Not chump change for IDFG.

I think interest will remain high, but this is not a great comparison. With deer and elk, purchasing a tag means you are hunting. Going forward, there will be no guarantee of deer/elk hunting with purchase of a license.

I think the license purchase will get rid of some people not many. I hope they don’t give out draw statistics. Keep people guessing.

They don't make it clear, but I wonder if they'll look at all 5 of your choices before moving on to the next applicant...which is opposite of how the normal controlled drawing works. I feel like this method would definitely hurt the odds on certain tags

I heard that, too. I can’t imagine there’s too many units getting picked up on a second choice for elk. They eluded to the possibility of drawing on subsequent choices but I can’t imagine it. Maybe deer units but who knows.

NM considers all choices before moving on (except fourth and fifth are for leftover permits). I’m not sure that’s typical though.
