So my fellow Alaskans and roksliders what the heck is going on .. Working out of town and commuted a few hundred miles from wasilla ak to sterling through the pass and was astonished at what I saw. I know the weather has been a bit odd but it was 58 degrees in portage alaska and 54 degrees at the top of the pass. I've been driving this pass for a long time and never seen such a lack of snow..

So what's your thoughts on our wildlife. I know winter thaws and refreezes play havoc on sheep but this has been more like break up. Hers a few pics. For those not familiar this area this time of year usually has feet of snow not inches...or bare slopes!

take some of our cold, -25 degree f temps are the norm this year. Im sick of it. Too cold to even go outside and do something.

Oh no it's all yours...;). Typically this time of year sterling is well well below zero .... Today, well I worked outside in a light sweat shirt..

I've only been up here ten year and it's by far the warmest winter spell I've seen. It's going to play heck with the Iron Dog Race and the Iditarod. My snowmachine has yet to leave the garage and doesn't look like it will for a while. I'd be lying if I said I didn't love the warm weather but I have a feeling we'll be paying for it in a week or two.

I might have to hit the mountains to see if any bears are popping out. Sounds like the Kenai River is open too. Good opportunity to shake off the mid winter fishing itch. The moose have to be lovin the lack of snow. Hope the sheep fair ok.

Yeah the Kenai looked pretty sweet today. I don't even recall seeing any snow on the banks in cooper landing. Kenai lake appears to be all ice free as well..

I have a spot I am going to check later this week if things stay the same.

I'm not going to even try to guess what it is going to do to game populations. I just hope its not too bad.

Here in Idaho too, the snow pack is way below normal and I'm sure this summer will be hot and dry.

We just had the annual Klondike for the Boy Scout troop this last weekend and the boys are supposed to use sleds to run the circuit for the event and we had to put wheels on the sled because there isn't any snow down low. I even saw one troop carting a wheelbarrow for their "sled".

Just for comparison sake, I thought I'd throw a couple pictures in of what the pass looked like last year. The snow berm on my left was the divider that separates north and southbound lanes and was probably over 15 feet tall.

this is what is causing the warm wind & more rain,a giant high pressure ridge off California is pushing this warm moist air north, its the same here in northern b.c yet on the east coast they are having one of the coldest winters in years.most places in cali have had less than 10 inches of rain in the past year.

I figured California must of had something to do with this miserable winter we're having.:)

Maybe the refuge here on the Peninsula will burn this year... Wouldn't that be sweet? Finally some moose browse! They will never let it happen though.

This is all phuked up ! I'm in Florida and just drove through a little snow flurry ! Nothing sticking but WTF ! You Alaskans really need to take your cold back.

My part of Utah is way off too! Where i work we are usually hitting highs of -10 and lows of -30 or colder in the dead of winter... We only were -20 for one week and below zero for a month! Im not gonna complain though... I work outside so a nice winter is always good.... Hoping it doesnt hurt the heards too bad....
