There’s always the same questions about gear, rifles, etc., which are good.

The rifleman is at the core, and I suck at the basics. I practice with my tripod a lot, cause that is how I hunt 99% of the time and have taken all my rifle animals.

This is from my day with @Bluumoon and the gang, found it when I was emptying my pack.

Been working to redeem myself, and will post it up progress after the summer. This picture is my first ever attempt at this drill I think Form created.

@mxgsfmdpx I think I need some eyes on for feedback. @NSI don’t laugh.

That drill is flat out humbling!

But just shooting it 5-10 times you get immensely better and more familiar with your system. It really is a great practice drill.

I’m a picky hunter, so normally my shots aren’t rushed, and I’m pretty stable. But you never know what you’ll come across in the field, and that drill will NEVER hurt to be good at!

I find new ways to suck at shooting, reloading, and sometimes life in general nearly every day.

When I started shooting that drill (Credited to Carl Ross) I was doing it untimed and thought I was pretty decent. Timer is a kick in the nuts. Then you adapt and get better. Then you shoot it in front of strangers and fall apart again.

Come on over to

and find new ways to suck. If it goes as planned, we’ll all get to learn from each other at some point.

You know I’m out there minimum 5 days a week rain or shine. And you have my number 😎

Anytime man!

This drill was eye opening for me. I think i made 4 or 5 the first day of class. We never did it again at the end, more used it as a way to show everyone how bad they are. I plan to work on it quarterly.

Its not something I want to over practice more than just shooting the positions themselves. I think its better served as a metric of where you're at than something to focus on solely if that makes sense.

So what is the drill?

My cousin shot off hand a 214" muley that jumped up and hes in the Boone and Crocket in OR for his buck back in 2015.

That's badass dude! Of course it CAN happen, it's just way less likely than doing it intentionally. But that's an exact reason why the drill can be so valuable! I know @Dioni A did it intentionally on a big ol buck last year at close range. Buck bedded in some thick trees, and he went in after him and shot him free hand up close and personal. So I think it's a very valid drill for hunting, and that scenario is perfect example.

Some people are clutch for some reason. But, I think that there is an underestimated amount of luck... who knows.
Absolutely agreed.

The animals need to be there, cooperate, luck...all the above. The best part is we dont hunt for horns or antlers, we hardly ever pass a legal animal up. We just meat hunt. My cousin had 10-12 points that he didn't use and burned them. He was walking back down the road to shoot a forky on the last evening and this monster popped up. I think he's #25 or something in the book...he may have dropped down on his ranking. Anyway...the moral of the story, be ready to shoot in all positions.

We hunt off hand most of the time for blacktail in thick timber in OR and we track cow elk in the snow. Off hand is the game most of the time. But last year on our cow elk hunt my cousin missed 2 off hand. I miss one, and then I took a cow at 535 sitting on rock with my rifle on a 8" burnt tree that was tri pod hieight with no rear rest just floating it. Day 7 of an 8 day hunt. Go figure. We had moving elk with split seconds to shoot.

What an awesome buck!! Yeah I would 100% rather shoot 500 yards with a front and rear rest, than 100 yards freehand haha.

After that drill and continually proving to ourselves we suck at standing unsupported, I'd be hesitant to take any shot like that. The key is that with just a little thought, you're not far from a standing supported position.

Very few people are "natural" shots. They do exist. I went through the academy with a guy who had never picked up a firearm in his life. He literally could not miss! I grew up with firearms and have been hunting since I was a kid. I'm an above average shot but I have to work at it. It is a perishable skill for most of us. Just keep at it and stay on the grind. You'll get it!

I tried the drill today, got a nice helping of humble pie! It showed me what I need to work on, I'll be trying it again soon.
