but you already admitted to trying to find a problem when you said you already had 1000s of 30-06...

I don't know about converting to 338, but it sure seems like it fits your criteria and works well in a 20" barrel

I'd vote 35 Whelen. But 375 Ruger would be considered for me as well.

If I'm honest, I've never really seen the point in a step between .30 & .358. I was really considering something between .35 & .40ish

375 Ruger, or even 416 Ruger if you're looking for the rifle to be 9-10 lbs total, but if you want to keep it lighter, one of the 338's, 35, or 9.3. Choose among the latter by how much velocity you want (copper vs lead), range, and game size. 338 bullet selection covers all bases but still aren't a 35+ medium bore. The 35 lead bullets tend to be softer as they tend to most be used on deer sized game and have worse BC's, then the 9.3's are tough again for the same bigger critters like the 375's are for too.

If you have a great 30 magnum rifle, I think it makes the most sense to skip the 338's and go for one of the 35+ cartridges. Take the 30 when long range shots are a real probability then take the medium bore rifle when they aren't.

I just got off the phone with Jesse & had a really informative long chat regarding all things middley-bore. I'm going with the 9.3. It's uncommon enough to pique my interest, whilst still being ready to feed & for $275 for a bore & chamber job, it's a bit of a no-brainer.

We discussed the various Whelen options & although he highly recommends the .400, he's of the same opinion as me: too damn spendy to feed & it's a week's worth of work to form 50 pieces of brass from cylinder, or buy it at $6/each!

Good choice on the 9.3. I used one on a bear this spring with a 250gr Accubond at 327 yards.

I enjoy my 35 Whelen and my 9.3x62 when hunting elk in coastal rain forests. Hard to go wrong with either of them. But then again I like taking my big Swede (358 Norma) out for elk as well if I'm hunting mixed terrain. I say you made a great choice with the 9.3

I had a .400 once upon a time. Besides the issues with brass, etc.. it didn't feed worth darn with those straight cases. I can also confirm .411 bullets were essentially non-existent too, and that was back when you could still buy stuff! I imagine 9.3's aren't exactly thick on the ground either, but likely more common than .411.

I'd go 338-06 myself. A metric euro round on a modern type american rifle just doesn't seem quite right.... and since logic has nothing to do with it, that is how I'd make the call. Relatively inexpensive Hornady and Sierra bullets will work well in a 338, and that is convenient.

I’m very happy with my .325 wsm. Shoots 200 grain Partitions at .75” and recoil’s not bad at all.
