I need a basic 30-06 load

I do not shoot 30-06 but I have two family rifles and a bunch of brass hanging around so I prepped the brass. I like reloading so I am looking for a universal mid grain load to just fill up these cases and put them away for the arrival of zombies. Really just universal to any rifle and safe for target or hunting without getting hung up on group sizes or max velocity. There are plenty other projects here to get me chasing my tail with precision stuff. I have done a search here and I have the reloading manuals but with the knowledge here I figured I would ask before I went down and purchased projectiles. Thanks in advance.

I’d look at the M1 service rifle loads. Hornady has a section in their manual and Hodgdon has them published here:

When I looked into loading ‘06 for my dad it seemed imr 4064 was an old standby I’d try it and something like a Hornady interlock in the grain I wanted. I bet that would make a decent load all around

I second the Garand loads. Should be safe and effective in any rifle.

I have Varget and H4350, IMR4350 on hand and I do not have any projectiles yet. I have other powders but I dont think they work. H1000, H4831SC, Retumbo etc geared towards my PRC rifles

56-58 grs. of IMR4350 (seems to be a sweet spot) with 165 gr. Accubond or 165 gr. Partition. In two completely different 30-06 rifles, a Remington 700 and a Ruger 1B a load of 57.4 grs of IMR4350 with each of these two bullets shot great!

I prefer IMR 4064 under some decent 150 grain bullet. Killed deer and elk with them out to 375 yards and doesn't have to be the spendy bullets.

IMR 4350 9 1/2 primer Winchester cases
Hornady SP or Sierra Pro Hunter 150gr.....59gr
Any 165gr.....58gr

Sierra Pro Hunter..180gr.....57gr
Sierra SBT 200gr.....54gr

IMR 4064 any case
Hornady 150gr.....52gr

May have to try H4350 if rifle likes it, but I would almost bet these will shoot!

I’ve had great luck with 175 TMKs over 58gr of H4350. Did load dev for my dad and got good results from 165 and 178 gr bullets as well.

OP, H4831SC would be fine. With that, the 4350 class of powders will get you a basic, safe load and use less powder doing it. For what you have described, I would be leaning toward a 150 gr cup and core bullet. The 4350 range is a better choice vs stuffing the case full of a slower powder such as H4831 for your purposes based on what you have on hand.

Or pick up one of the 4064 (IMR, Accurate) powders when you order the 150 gr bullets, burn even less powder, and get what you are looking for.
