Hydraulic Press for Barrel Vise?

I've seen videos on the interweb where a guy will use a shop press on a barrel vise to get extra force to hold a barrel.

Can you deform a barrel with a 12 ton shop press? Or with a 20 ton press?

Has anyone used this method with success on a Tikka factory barrel removal?

Any experiences or advice appreciated.

My smith uses a small hydraulic jack/press for barrels and wood blocks for clamping. An action wrench and a 2# hammer to smack the wrench handle. No issues.

You can definitely bend a barrel with one, you’d have to be almost trying to collapse one though. But if you use some common sense and restraint they’re fine.

I throw my barrel vise’s in my big hydraulic press as a vise holder and no doubt it adds a little extra holding power. No worries on it crushing a barrel at all. I might only hold it with 2-3 tons max though but that’s plenty to hold it in place.
