Hunting with a hernia?

Any one have any tricks. I have a right groin, abdominal and possible the left groin hernia. Opening day is sat and surgery is sept 29th. 😉

Sometimes a hernia truss / support belt can help. Strain as little as possible (take small loads). If it gets exacerbated, then lay down and rest, slowly working/pushing the hernia back in with your hand.

Been doing for years... Just push it in and keep going.

To be fair I always say I'm going to get it fixed after the big games seasons or after turkey season but always find a "reason" not to.

had both sides done at once back in the late 1990's the old fashioned way, cut from one side to the other. was kind of ouchy for a month but was back to work. never felt real good for over a year. the band aid style they say is much easier. despite some advice, would not want a complete tear miles from help.

I'm set for surgery but there was no way that was happening before elk season. I was looking for some tricks to minimize pain and further damage. I may try a belt but not sure that will help the groin. Oh well, elk starts sat!

My thought would be to take a year off to fix that issue before getting out there. Nothing like being on the side of a mountain with your you know what in your hands cause you pushed it to hard. never had a groin Hernia but I did have the unbelical done with mesh. Not as serious as yours sounds. Problem with using something to minimize the stress of it is when you plug one hole if you have multiple its going to stress that area also. Its like trying to stop a boat with multiple holes from sinking. You need to dry dock that thing and get it fixed.
Hope your going with good friends who understand what you have going on so they can try to minimize your injury by picking up the slack. Good luck if you do go out though.

Hmm- It's probably all good unless you get a strangulated hernia and can't move because it hurts so much. You might be well served to read up a bit on that one a bit... It happened to a friend of mine in the backcountry and she has a scar from her sternum to her pubic bone from the surgery-- thankfully she was able to get to hospital in a couple hours (after literally crawling for hours to get to a nearby camp for help).

Best of with your decision process.

The doc said I'm good but suggested walking slow and I have about a 40# limit on weight. Slow and light sounds good to me. My first spot is only about a 1/2 mile walk. I usually glass from there so rest will come quick.

I hunted with a right inguinal hernia for 3+ years. Despite all I heard it bothered me less hunting than about anything else I did. Even packing heavy loads caused no issue and no additional pain. For me sitting, desk at work and driving, were by far the worst. Walking, hiking, packing, was no issue. Finally got it fixed last year on Aug 12 and went hunting Sept 16th. Cardio was less than ideal from having to recover but everything else went fine.

Hunting with a hernia doesn’t sound okay for me. Recently I had an abdominal hernia repair surgery at Shouldice hospital in Ontario and the first thing the surgeon reminded me was to be careful for at least 2 months for hunting. It’s after the surgery, so you could imagine how dangerous will be to hunt with a hernia. So I would not appreciate hunting with a hernia. Just get a surgery, get some rest and then continue hunting.

I hunted 8 days in varied terrain. t the end of the trip I was pretty sore. It was the worst season I have had since taking elk hunting serious. I had my surgery this morning and the doc said he could tell I aggravated all three hernias but said it was nothing major. I know I'm lucky but I just couldn't give up on the season. Now I'm hoping to be good for a trip to Wisconsin at the end of October.

Just found out I've been living with an inguinal hernia for more than a year now. What's the surgery like? How long you expect to be laid up?

I had the surgery yesterday. I had a triple hernia and threw in a vasectomy. So far not too bad. I went in at 0700 and left the hospital at 1100. I am stiff and sore but all in all, not too bad. I have only taken one pain pill and continued to take protandim to help with swelling. I was told 1 to 4 weeks of recovery and looks like that is just about right.
