For me I'll have my general season muzzleloader tag, a couple depredation doe deer tags, maybe a couple antelope depredation tags, spike elk, and a couple cow elk, pheasant, chuckar, coyotes, ducks, geese, and a couple other things I'm forgetting and all in Utah. Having family and friends with a bunch of private ground sure is nice.

365 in Cal. for hogs. hunting license and hog tags and ur good to go. Let's not forget guide fee. There is some public land hog hunting but they are as scares as unicorns on public land.

Holy sheeit! Trail cams, tracking devices on their pick ups, air surveillance, dna testing, all to net two fines of less than 6k and some probation. And people wonder where our tax/lic dollars go.
I don't know, I see both sides of it. Seems like they did a lot, but I've heard from some who helped with the investigation that say it was not as crazy as it sounds in the news. Then again, starting an investigation based purely on social media attention is surely questionable.

On the other hand, it seems like another case of poachers getting off easy given the amount of evidence in the report. If the affidavit is accurate, they had been shooting the big "town" deer for years over purposely baited areas, salt licks under the tree stands, molasses spray.

The affidavit:

I might burn my 11 points for deer in CA if CO does not award me a deer tag. I’m certain a CA elk, pronghorn or sheep tag will never happen so not much to worry about there. If I don’t burn my CA points for deer I’ll probably venture to CO and participate in the OTC circus for elk in November. I will definitely be hunting local, last years fire cleaned up a lot of country and I am chomping at the bit to hunt with the highly coveted A zone tag in those areas. I will find something to do.
@Billinsd Who you going hog hunting with? There’s a guy up the road in Greenfield that makes some killer Swiss sausage if you want your meat processed. Don’t know what his turn around time is but people never complain about his product. His prices are a little steep though. Good luck with the hogs.

Ain't that the truth!
I drew muzzy bull elk at Fort Hunter Liggett a year and a half ago with max points. I had about a 3.5% chance. It was the best odds hunt with an excellent chance of success, compared to any other hunt.

That's awesome! 1-28 odds as a max point holder is just crazy. It's just without max points you will never have better than like a 1-1000 odds in your lifetime for drawing any of those tags. Looking at the number of 19pt max holders and annual tag quotas the turnover rate to clear all max point holders is like 7 years for pronghorn, 13 years for Elk, and 88 years for sheep. As someone that didn't have the chance to start buying points 19 years ago it sort of sucks to know you will never get better than 1-1000 odds.

Crazy story; 3-4 years ago my daughter took her hunters safety course. Being that it was 90 mins away I decided to take it with her. (Had been a few years lol) Anyway, the instructor had a bunch of stuff on display, including two elk racks. Decent raghorns, nothing massive. I asked where he killed them; California. I was pretty surprised he had drawn two bull tags here. Even crazier, he drew them in back to back years. Can't recall what zone and didn't ask about points.

Drawing a CA elk tag in back to back years has to be like 1-1,000,000 odds.

Yeah I took a hunter safety course in Arizona years ago to get the extra point and all of the like 6-8 instructors/helpers (various ages) had drawn and killed desert bighorn sheep in the state. I'm not really a conspiracy theory type guy, but you really gotta wonder about that one.

Looking at last year’s draw statistics has shown me that a lot of people are saying to hell with a bull tag and dumping points on cow tags. I believe it was 16 or 17 points was the highest that got burned on a cow tag. With me being one point shy of max on elk I know eventually in my lifetime I will make it into the max point pool, but then who knows if you’ll even draw then. But you can’t draw if you don’t apply. I know four people who have drawn tule bull tags and three that have drawn cow tags. One of the bull tags went to a person with four PP, talk about luck drawing the random tag.

It's a RAW deal for EVERYONE that didn't start on the ground floor, pretty much. There are some cow elk, and lesser deer hunts, possibly without max points. Max point holders will probably start dropping off, due to age. If you are in the military, Fort Hunter Liggett has fantastic, deer and elk hunts at pretty good odds, soldiers told me on my elk hunt, have were soldiers and half civilians.
