Looking for a little help. Decide to give Montana a try this year. Looking to see if anyone can lend a helping hand. I am planning on camping around Grant Montana. I have a deer and elk tag. Been doing online scouting, Mostly been looking at unit 328 and 329. Not asking for anyone’s honey hole just a point in the right direction.
Thanks

If you're not looking for anyone's honey hole then you should be good to go...bring warm clothes & hunt into the wind...good luck...wouldn't believe anything the biologists who drew the short straw tells you...just sayin

I hadn’t heard anything about that bill and would be shocked if something like that passed, there’s not nearly enough outfitters for all the out of state hunting here in MT and that’d be a huge economic loss in the big picture.

Thanks, hopefully next year will be better. Have you heard if that bill that Congress is trying to pass, is going to go through or not? The one about non resident having to get a guide?
Thats not a thing

I'm not sure where you heard that. I don't recall that being in any bill during the 2021 legislative session. I think you are confused about some of the other bills that were proposed. If I missed it somehow, it died before gaining any traction. Also, the next session isn't until 2023.

It's not that non-residents have to get a guide, it's that non-residents that book with an outfitter can buy an extra preference point. 75% of the the non-resident tag quota is allocated for applicants with preference points, any remaining or 25% is allocated for those that don't have any. And yes, unfortunately it passed.

I've been hunting private land in Montana for 30 years. Owners don't care to do landowner tags as its more paperwork.
Been fortunate to get tags for deer every year till 2021.
Looked at draw odds and it was unbelievable. Around 15,500 people bought or had 1 point. 40% drew.
About 4,500 people had no points but drew at a 50% level.
Now I'm in no man's land. There's 10,000 of us going in with 2 points. May or may not have better odds again going in with zero? May wish I could "give back" my point.
Now guided hunters can buy two points? Immediately putting them on par with me after two years?
Guess I'll just have to move up from Missouri .....

Got wind of another "angle" some are playing. Don't know if it's true.
Folks are putting "xtra folks" for tags with no intention of hunting so they accumulate points. If the group draws, the non hunters turn in their tag. Keep points but lose a bit of cash.
Next year, same game. Wifey has 6 points, hubby averaged to 3 even if he drew last year. Is this possible?

No. If you or your group draws, all points zero. Points are not restored for returned tags. Any points not applied with for 3 consecutive years also get deleted.

Only if she could somehow apply for 6 different years without drawing a tag, yes.
