Hunting in SoCal

I believe it’s 2 a day … for the limit and the red rattlesnake is the only one you can’t kill - any pet snakes would have to be caught while in possession of a fishing license …
We have killed 21 rattle snakes on my property in the past 10 months …

Funny thing is you legally can’t relocate rattle snakes from what I have been reading … so you have no choice legally but to kill them on your property .

One thing to keep in mind about D11 is that almost the entire southern half of the zone is a no shooting area, so no rifle hunting. It’s a shame really, because some of the higher densities of bear are on that side.

Well, I'm a pretty experienced rock climber and have not complained, but I have thought a lot of D11 is pretty rough. The issue is that it is hard to cover a lot of ground. I just watched S1 E2 of meat eater for like the fifth time over the years. I'll not complain anymore. Now I know our lands are not as bountiful but its also a short drive for a lot of us.

You don't need any kind of license to harvest rattlesnakes. There is a bag and possession limit which I don't recall what they are, but I know for sure you do not need a license for harvesting rattlesnakes.
You need a fishing license man. I was shocked to find it out. All I'm saying is do your due diligence and double check. The thought of some gov entity getting fines and fees outta somebody not knowing their sometimes intricate regs doesn't sit well within me. So Im just taking a sec to share things I was surprised to learn about.

Although you need a license for most snakes, and I have my fishing and hunting license… rattle snakes do NOT require a fishing license … there’s an exception for rattle snakes except for the red rattlesnake which is federally protected .

Where is that regulation written? Never seen anything on that before. Most NF are closed to target shooting but you are legally allowed to shoot at game while hunting legally. Have not seen anything regulating you cant shoot in the southern half of the zone? I believe the regulation was 500 yards from a major road or any structures, no shooting across roads or campsites, things of that nature.

Google LA County Firearms Closure map. I have the full size pdf but it’s too large to upload here. I screenshotted it but it’s gonna be hard to see. PM me if you can’t find it, maybe I can send it via PM. It’s 2.3 MB.

Illegal to discharge any firearm in areas that are red. Yellow is shotgun/archery only. There’s a way to turn on those survey grids in onx too, so you can better match up the closure areas.

Gary, laws change. You're behind the times on this one.

I did a lot of research on this. When it comes to state fish and game, they do not enforce this. I talked to multiple wardens over the phone. As long as you are 150 yards from all of the state fish and game mandated "no fire" zones, they will not enforce the map you are showing. This map was published by LA County Fish and Game Commission (NOT STATE) in 1994 and revised (no actual changes made) in 2007. There is no LA County ordinance that supports this map. There are 33 "no firearm discharge" zones. I put each zone in ChatGPT, 4 at a time because of data issues, and none of the "no fire arm discharge zones" in chapter 13 of LA County Firearms ordinances resembled these closures on the map. I called the LA County Sheriff's office and made zero headway finding anyone who knew anything substantial about this map.

One of the wardens I talked to stated he reached out to the the LA County Fish and Game Commission, LA Sheriff's, LAPD, and several other law enforcement agencies bordering these zones and was unable to definitively get answers about this map, supporting ordinances, or anything helpful. He stated I was like the 50th call in a few months on this. Year in and year out he gets calls like crazy around hunting season.

As always, do your own due diligence. I'm just sharing what I went through trying to get to the bottom of this map. I think this map was made for target shooting but that is just my opinion.
