Hunting elk Ks

Hello, wanted to know if anyone had any pointers on areas to hunting elk on Fort Riley Ks I got a anterless tag for 2019 was wanting little help where most elk hang out??

I wouldn't think a fella with the name elk slayer would have a problem finding elk on his own.

Congrats on drawing the tag! They issue a very limited number of permits each year for that area. I believe the Base has a biologist or two on staff. They should be able to provide you with the best info.

I posted because there was guy don perros who said he hunted in 2018 see alot of elk was just curious what his thoughts were. But as far as elk hunting goes I've hunted wy, co. for years but ks has not even close to the same landscape. I've kill 7 elk over the years one with a bow.

I didn't see a lot of elk. It was 7 days before I saw my first one. I probably only saw two dozen in 8 days and most of those were in the impact area. My advice is to keep moving until you find them. I think I would have found them sooner if I sat in the timbered draws instead of on the open ridges. They'll travel up those timbered draws out of view. Could also setup at the head of a draw where they have to come out to keep moving to the next draw. It seemed pretty evident to me that some elk were feeding in the impact area and bedding outside of it, so catching them coming and going may be a good strategy.

Ok thanks that was my plan as well but the haven't opened any good areas up this year yet.
Hoping they will this weekend. Was you calling bulls to get close to cows??
What area were you hunting around impact area??

A guy gave me a map. He and his sons had drawn several tags over the years. The map showed everywhere they saw elk. There were lots of places. I checked out most of them and didn't find anything. I found elk in a place that wasn't on their map. So, I think they can be anywhere, you just have to keep looking.

Congrats on that tag, it is a tough one to draw. A guy on Newberg’s fourm did a semi live hunt thread a year or two ago, you might check over there.
