Hunting dog injuries & treatment cost

Hunting partners lab ate a wine cork 2 days before our mule deer hunt. Cost him $6,300 for emergency surgery. Dog better retrieve a lot of ducks to repay that one.

Dang, that’s crazy (a quill coming out his nose)!

On my pup, after a few days you could feel the quills under the skin.
Interesting. Being mostly on his face and my dog being a wirehair they couldn't feel for them. Does your dog have a tight coat?

We had a lab years ago that had a run in with a porcupine. We pulled the quills and thought we got them all. Apparently we missed one and it traveled under the skin along her nose and came out her eye a week or so later leaving her blind in that eye. It's crazy how those quills can move undetected and cause problems. If your dog gets hit, check frequently after to make sure you got everything.

How did they find quills? I just removed some from my dog and one broke off. Vets couldn't find it and sure enough a few days later I see it sticking out the top of his nose like a flagpole, it probably traveled 4 or 5 inches from entry to exit. Lip to top of nose.

No she was wirey (PP). I think the quills were down in the muscle and worked their way up to the skin. It’s amazing how they can move around.

My friend’s GSP tried to eat three porcupines last weekend. I thought he should have learned after the first one. Fortunately, she had a pair of jeweler’s pliers in her vest and we got them all out right away. I can only imagine what a nightmare it would have been if they broke off or worked themselves in deeper.
