I'm always interested in gaining more knowledge and reading about hunting that pertains to elk, mule deer and hunting out west. I've already read Elk Hunting the West by Mike Eastman, I'm currently reading Cam Hanes' Backcountry Bowhunting and I'm looking for other books that would be similar. I plan on buying both of the books Ryan Hatfield has out and was wondering what other books you guys may recommend. Let me know.

Hi Elkoholic87.

These books aren't quite in the same genre but you might enjoy them nevertheless. I sure did when I read them a few months prior to my Kodiak brown bear hunt. They are both by Marvin Clark.

Pinnell and Talifson : Last of the Great Brown Bear Men

Track of the Kodiak

If you do read them do let me know how you like them.

Have a blessed Christmas.

Regards,

American Buffalo by Steven Rinella is great (as are all his books)

The BIG SKY by AB Guthrie is also a great read although more about an adventure in the fur trade era than only hunting

Robbie's book on hunting mule deer is very good too.

So many good books that are hunting related that might not be 100% about only hunting.

I agree with the Rinella recommendation, I would add The Sand County Almanac, kind of the foundation of outdoor writing IMO.

Not an instructional book, but Man Eaters of Kumaon by Jim Corbett is awesome.

Recommend David Petersen. He's a pretty prolific writer, and has written a bunch of books along with articles. I think he founded BHA as well, and lives in Colorado, hunts elk. Can get a little bit preachy at times regarding ethics and what he thinks of as an ethical hunter but he writes well. (Much better writer than Cam Hanes who is one of my heroes in this sport). More along the lines of Rinella. You can pick up his books at his site below, or sometimes find much better pricing buying used on ebay.

Scott Haugen is a local Oregon writer and has written numerous books on hunting western species (mule deer, blackmail, Roosevelt and Rocky Mountain elk, sheep, etc.)

Jim Zumbo has a book out called "Hunt Elk" printed in 1989. At the time, he said most of the Bulls he shot was with his 30/06, using 165 grain Remington Core-Lokt (which I found interesting). I had it in hard back, and it was full of very useful info. Lost it in Katrina along with a bunch of others whose titles escape me at the moment.
