Hunting archery elk with a two wheel drive

I live where you will be hunting and would say you don't often NEED 4wd for archery, but there are definitely places you don't want to try to get without it. And if you are exploring you won't know which roads need them and which you don't, and it is easy to get in a little over your head before you know it. It can snow (I needed 4wd because of this last year) and steep roads can necessitate 4wd as well. Chances are you won't need it, but it is an insurance policy I wouldn't want to be without.

I would take the suburban and chains. In Wyoming last year it snowed a foot of snow on me mid September. While I had a 4wd pickup I don't believe I had to have it as I just didn't go where I didn't think I could. Just think about where and what is in front of you and if need be, get out and take a look.

I've hunted Montana the last two Archery seasons, middle of September. Not to say it couldn't happen, but I don't think I've even considered putting the truck in 4wd yet.

I spent four days in four wheel drive last year, just on the primary travel routes in SW Montana.

I've been hunting sw mt the last couple years during archery. It's snowed several times and only limited my travel for 1 morning.

Man, I've only hunted out west twice but needed 4 wheel drive on both trips on multiple occasions. Not to sound like a smart aleck but if you own a vehicle with 4 wheel drive and don't plan to use it for hunting out west what good is it? I'd sell both of them and buy something with 4 wheel drive you could use all the time.

An advantage of a 2-wheel drive is you'll spend more time hunting and less time driving. Everyone tries to get deeper in to escape other hunters, only to find a dozen pickups at the end of the road and you waste half a day driving to another spot. I've used a 2WD sedan for years and take lots of harassment from friends about it; but the looks you get are priceless when you come down the road with a 6x6 rack strapped to the roof! Of course, snow presents a different problem so you have to tag out early...

Worked with an old rancher who said the only difference between 2 and 4 wheel drive was the distance you had to walk back for the tractor
