Hunt Planning Help

Unfortunately for me, the 2016 season is already over with a cow elk to show for it. Im proud of the harvest but because of a deployment, I was left with only those 3 days of early season hunting for this year. My question is kind of a general one. I will be home by the end of October 2017 and am looking for an over the counter type of hunt (not whitetail) hopefully in one of the western states, but Canada might be ok if its not unreasonably expensive (working mans salary). Does anyone on here have suggestions on some type of hunt that doesn't require a draw that can be accomplished in the November-December months? I do get to hog hunt once a year and same for whitetail and black bear, so Im looking for something a bit more.... well a bit different. Ive only hunted elk during archery (backpack style) and Ive been looking into antelope or bison but not sure where I can hunt those that doesn't feel like a canned hunt??? Im open to pursuing nearly anything. Any help with hunt planning would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the post. Is that Muley or Couse that your referencing? Also, you said starting points? Do you need points to hunt it? Its Buck only if I'm not mistaken correct? I didn't realize that the season went all the way into January but knowing that now, I have an Army buddy that lives near Globe and maybe Ill head that way in search of that next year. Thanks again.

The third season in Colorado is usually the first week of november and there are a ton of OTC units during that season. The fourth season is a draw but there are some units that have very good draw odds so you could get a tag pretty easy. Montana deer and elk season goes into late november, you would have to put in for a license or buy one pretty quick when they go on sale in the summer (don't know if that would be possible if you are deployed) but they offer a very long season and you could hunt a lot just in the month of November.

Thank you for your service and stay safe over there! If you have any questions keep asking them guys will chime in on here.

There are no OTC deer units in Colorado last I checked. There may be leftovers but in a state like CO remember leftovers are leftovers for a reason. Actually if you are just looking now you are pretty much left with the crap tags. Even in AZ archery is OTC south of the Colorado but success rates are in the teens or single digits.
