How does it typically work?
Do the brokers get paid by the outfitters?
By the hunters?
What are the typical fees in either scenario?

If your referencing booking Agents or consultants generally they get a percentage from the outfitter when you book. How much? I really dont know. I also dont know if there is exclusivity given to some booking agents or if they block out a set amount of hunts to sell.

It used to be the booking agent got about 10% of the cost of the hunt. But what I found, at least a few years ago, is that the 10% got added to the price of the hunt. I.E., if you booked directly, the hunt might cost $6000, but if you went through the booking agent, the same hunt was $6600 for example. Don't know if that still holds true though.

Easy way to check that is cross reference both prices. I have done that several times and always found them to be the same.

I went through Jack Atcheson & Sons Inc and booked my hunt which would have been the same price if I had went directly thru the outfitter, so I'm not sure how it works..

Alot of the the times, the outfitter pays the finding fee to the broker. The cost of the hunt is usually not any higher as this is basically an employee of the outfitter. Only difference is, the outfitter only pays said employee when he produces.

I have only used a broker once, for a late decision to hunt certain dates that fall. I signed up for a hunt with the broker in early spring for a September hunt... booked it through a broker who had one hunt available through an outfitter who worked in the area I wanted to hunt (it was DIY but I got bush flights and few other minor things out of it). I don't remember the total, but when I booked, I paid 10% of the total price to the broker and 40% to the outfitter. I paid the remaining 50% balance to the outfitter on arrival.

I tried to contact the outfitter direct and he said they were all booked up, but the broker advertised he had a hunt with him reserved. Never spoke to the broker again until after the hunt when he wanted a review of the outfitter. Worked out fine... I would have rather given the outfitter 100%, but it was his choice to get his hunts booked through a broker. The 10% I paid to the broker was not added to the cost of the hunt. It came out of the outfitters original advertised cost of the hunt.

I'd do it again if I needed to, but it isn't typical for my needs... unless I can't commit to my hunting season early enough.
