I really wouldn't focus on buying points. States can change the rules at any time. An example, in Montana you used to be able to buy points for kids of any age. My youngest has 3 for everything. Then they changed the rule, can't anymore. By the time he can apply, I doubt those points will still be there and I'll have to fight (likely unsuccessfully) to get them reinstated. I was also buying him preference points, he has two, then they changed the rule to consecutive years or lose them. Well I can't apply at all anymore, so they are gone. 10 years from now, who nows how the states will treat points or even still have them.
