I'm 5'9", it's a good wolf. The largest taxidermy form we could find was 55" nose to base of tail. This wolf was 60".
That is a tank! Good on you for that one!sent you a PM with some how to info:
Wolves here in Idaho have been over called and don't seem to respond to howling like they did a few years ago. I have encountered a number of wolves while elk or deer hunting. Finding fresh tracks in the snow so that you know they are in the area, then spot and stalk is what most guys are doing here. I had a really cool encounter with a Montana wolf in the Bob Marshall a couple of years ago. The wolf was stalking a calf elk and I was stalking the wolf. He was too fast and ghost-like though....He got the elk, I got skunked.Given 2 scenarios; one being a rifle hunt in the fall season [before snow].....and the other being winter conditions....what strategies can a guy use to kill a wolf?
It seems to me setting up on a good observation point covering one of their travel routes in early season would be a decent strategy especially early AM and right up to dark.
Calling, Howling?
Has anyone tried dragging a deer leg or scent drag type of thing?
I'm a bowhunter and the only guys I know that have shot a wolf with a bow did it off of a moose carcass.
Late season it seems like guys use snow machines to cover a lot of ground.
Let er rip on effective strategies for a guy to kill a wolf with a rifle.....
