I want to get a short as possible on a 6CM barrel without falling off the cliff on performance. I am shooting factory loads so cannot reload fast powder. I am thinking 16-18 would be nice to get the package down to the size I am after. Thanks for any input.

16” unless you want to deal with the SBR process or you could build a pistol and go shorter.

Antelope, deer, wolf...likely never over 300 yards or so.
Hornady used a 24” test barrel for their 103 eldx ammo. Average was 3050 fps. I bet you could plan on 25fps or so lost per inch of barrel. Might give you a semi educated guess on speeds. Plug those numbers into a calculator and see where you end up at.

Check this out:

This guy has done a bunch of barrel length and velocity testing and puts a lot into it. He seems to be very honest about the info and limitations

My next rifle build is going to be a 6mm CM (savage action) in a chassis with a folding stock. Barrel cut to 18" I think. It will put the new hornady 6mm ARC with a 24" barrel to shame and be shorter.... At least I hope so.
