Hey guys! How far does everyone camp from their hunting/glassing spot if bivy hunting (or light tent)? Do you carry camp with you or leave it in place?

If terrain and conditions permit, I like to be very close. For example, this last elk season a small Ridgeline allowed me to camp 100 yards from my glassing spot and I ended up shooting my elk from there, within sight of my tent. I generally like to be within a mile of my target area though, and I'll leave my camp in place unless I have a good reason to re-locate.

A lot of that is going to depend on terrain and where the animals are moving. I like to be 1/4 mile or closer to my glassing spot if possible. The nastier the terrain the closer I will try to get. If I can easily access the top and run open ridges then a mile is not a big issue.

I leave my camp in place once set up. If I get into some elk a ways from camp then I will just grab enough stuff for a couple nights out and take that with me, I don't move all of my stuff.

It depends on many factors but number one is don't camp where you run the risk of the animals you are hunting to become aware of your presence. Could be right on the glassing nob or could be a mile away. Only you in the situation can decide.

If I still haven't found an animal I want to kill, I keep gear packed and ready if its a long hike to glass. If its close you can keep it up until you move insearch of a mature criter.
Once I find a buck/bull that I want to kill, I stay planted in my camp spot until he is dead, gone or I find one better.

A few years ago a buddy and I were going to hunt opening archery weekend but he had to work that Friday. So I went up, hiked in, set up camp, and sent him the coordinates. So it's right before last light and I start hearing cow chirps. I figured it was him trying to locate me after he got close. I pulled out a cow call and was unzipping the tent when I heard antlers clashing together as well. I'm thinking.........."that's definitely not him". So I pull the binos out and can barely make out a herd of 30-40 elk out feeding just over 100 yards from my tent. This was the first time either of us had even been in this area..........sometimes you just get lucky.......or unlucky where you set up. I think we were a little too close at that point. My buddy showed up about an hour later, and over the next couple days we never did see that herd again.

As long as you aren’t sleeping in their bedding area and ha e a cold camp, you can be pretty close. Ridges and other terrain will dictate the actual distance. I’ve had elk with in site of my tent. I did mess up early in my hunting career one time when my watch alarm (beeping) startled some elk that bedded by me. So, I use a vibration alarm on the watch now and make sure I’m not in a bedding area/spot. That said, I like to be at least 1/4 mile from where I will hunt. But, you can be really close or even camp at your glassing spot.

Plenty of places to bivy/glass the same time. Otherwise Treat it Like an or orp. Out of site sound/1 terrain feature away. The terrain feature is for wind in this case so plan/use accordingly
