I don't have a set distance off the lands I start at. I measure the magazine's maximum working length for the cartridge and back it off a little from that measurement to ensure it functions properly. I then load three rounds and shoot for data. If I am not satisfied with the results from those three rounds, I will load the bullet to the recommended COAL and repeat the process. Typically, after the second set of three rounds, I have a good idea whether this load will work for my rifle. For example, I loaded 77Tmk's to 2.38 COAL, which works in my stock magazine, but they did not group well. I then loaded them to 2.26 COAL, and they grouped well, so for loads using the 77Tmk, I stay with 2.26". I really try to avoid chasing seating depths, trying to get a load to work, as I find that it becomes a waste of time.
