Being solo and ill equiped I have limit myself to 3 miles. From what I am reading, I have been leaving some good hunting out there in th evening as I normally head back toward camp before dark. I am slowing getting some good stuff to work with and am looking to extend my range and camp near the elk, gaining valuable hunting time in the process. This is part of the evolution to shooting bigger bulls.
It depends on the terrain I'm hunting. If it's rugged country, I can usually lose people about a mile in. If it's rolling terrain, sometimes you have to go 3 plus miles. It's all relative to where you are hunting, what time of year, and what hunting pressure is like in the area.
This was my first year elk hunting so I don't have much to offer. But I will say I had multiple elk sightings less than 1 mile from major trailheads. I hiked as far as 3.5 miles off main trails. That's about as far as I am willing to go. I don't think I could get the meat out before it would spoil if I were further than that.
In 2009, I finally put the pieces together in an area I had hunted for awhile.
In the past, I had been going in 2-5 miles and beating myself up doing it.
Since 2009, we have killed 17 elk not more than 1/3 of a mile from my truck.
Some only 250yds from the road.
