How far are your prairie dog shots?

20-475 yards for me. Average with the 17HMR is about 75-100 with a max of 150-175 if there is little wind, that accounts for most of mine. I do use my 221FB to 300 ish and my regular hunting rifle to 475. Never tried one past 475, that one was a first shot kill and I declined to try again…

I’ll shoot at one way out there but generally past about 400 there’s a good chance I’m just going to scare them a bit.

It’s a 6” moving target.

Are you guys using dials or reticles on those longer shots?….or a 300 yard zero?
With the larger rifles, I dial past 300 on a target that small. Helps to find one that decides to stand tall and still for a bit. There is a dial on the 17HMR, but never used it, just too dicey with any breeze. So I just sight the 17 in slightly high at 100 and hold for the head/upper chest on the longer shots. About 150 to maybe 175 is as far as it’s been used.

I’ve shot them from 0 to 987 yards. A more realistic normal shot distance starts at about 75-150 yards and as they wise up we work out to about 350 before we move to another part of the town.

75-225 with the .22LR and fixed 6x, 300 is hard.
Past 200 to 450 usually grab .223 or 6.5CM

Technically I am shooting what we call Gophers , I live in Alberta and not sure what the difference would be/is. One hundred plus yards with a .22 is my self imposed minimum if I use a rifle.

we dial. we each had scopes with a special reticle built with a dot one moa up and down from the cross hair and a windage line on each side of the cross hair for hold off.
shoot some easy 300 yd shots then move out to 600 to 700 and miss a few.
if we get cocky we go farther.

90% of our shooting is 50-300yards. Sometimes we stretch it out to 5-600 which is good practice IMO

I’ve been doing anything from 25yds to 250yds. I’ve got a place lined up that I can go out to at least 750yds. But I’m not that good of a shot and probably won’t hit squat.

I have hit them beyond a mile.
Most of the time between 150-600 yards.

The one time I have been most shots were 30-400yds. A couple of spots you could shoot out to 800yds...my hit percentage took a drastic downturn past 400yds because of the wind.
