How far ahead of time do you prepare your backcountry meals

Trying to decide how far in advanced I can make up my peanut butter sandwiches and other things and they stay good.. I typically vacuum seal them and freeze them. Can they sit for a few weeks before I grab and go?

You'll want to freeze and then seal. Trust me on this! I bag up dry stuff, label it, and store it in one of those plastic "ammo-cans" that have a gasketed seal. I've read that throwing a hand warmer or two in when you seal it up will absorb the oxygen and keep stuff fresher.

Well we will see how mine turned out. I am out of town for work and as soon as I get back next week I take off for a couple weeks of hunting so hopefully everything is still edible when I get on the mountain.

Take-a-Knee - What is the outcome if you seal then freeze? just curious, got me wondering of all the possibile weirdness that can happen to objects when frozen!

If you vac bag a soft piece of bread it flattens out into a thin layer. Your PBJ will end up being a 1/4 inch thick piece of mush.

I made a few butthole sammiches for this year's hunt. Sealed and then frozen. They are actually kinda tough to each because they get so hard. I didn't think they tasted bad though. I would definitely do it that way again. They also take up less space if you seal and then freeze.

Ahh I see said the deaf man! Makes sense when taking about pbjb sandwiches. Would it absorb into a tortilla and become a sort of pbjb bar? I'm looking into the no heat meals and trying to learn so please forgive the ignorance.

BHS we make up as needed during the trip using single serve pkgs of Justins PB & Honey. Sometimes we even use hard salami instead of bacon... And bacon bits will work in a pinch to.

As for the rest of my meals, I keep a tote of various leftover food and add DIY dehydrated meals to it through out the year. I consider it just good emergency prepper preparedness. Besides, when that spur of the moment hunt'n or fish'n trip comes up I just grab the tote and go. I keep a propane burner & cook pot, along w/ a 2L bottle of water in the tote as well. And there is always a box of Clif Bars and a couple cans of chili and usually a couple pkgs of Frito's for a quick serving of Frito Pie.

So I'm always packed.
