I have been researching antelope and mule deer units that I want to apply for this year and see Days/Hunter. Since I am a NR, I wont be able to hunt the unit every weekend. Is this total days a hunter hunted the unit, harvest or no harvest? Or is this the average number of days it took to harvest an animal? Thanks in advance for your time in helping me.

Fairly certain it is days hunted reported by any hunter that filled out their harvest information survey regardless of whether that hunter was successful or not.

I noticed they're "days hunted" seemed strange to me as well. I'm seeing 20-30 days hunted per animal and I was thinking that it seemed incorrect as most people don't get to hunt for an entire month. It makes more sense that it's an average accounting for the unsuccessful as well.

20-30 days per animal sounds like a lot. But if it's 20% success rate that's 4-6 days per successful hunter.

That info is only as good as the people filling out the survey. I know two different people who say it means the day of the season you shot your elk on. For instance last year he shot his elk on the 22nd day of the season but it was the second day of his hunt. He put down that he hunted 22 days.

A day is counted if you hunted the entire day or any part of a day; so if you go out after work and hunt for a hour, you are supposed to count that as a hunting day.

If you hunted for 10 days (or parts of any of those 10 days) and you indicated you were successful, I would think it would be recorded as 10 days hunted for that animal (you should not be hunting for that species AFTER you were successful).

So, I would not put a lot of stock in just that statistic when deciding on what unit to apply for.

Recently I noticed the hunting info that comes up in the Hunt Planner, when you click on "Hunt Area Harvest Report" the little window that pops up has data labeled "Days/Hunter" but if you go to the actual full harvest report you will see the same data, same numbers, labeled "Days/Harvest."

So I believe that is a mistake on their part, in that they labeled the Hunt Planner data incorrectly. It should be Days/Harvest, or 'Days hunted per animal harvested."
