How does the action effect accuracy?

Can someone tell me how the action affects the accuracy of a rifle? Or, is the action's quality/cost only have to do with how well the mechanism cycles ammunition? How important is it compared to the barrel?

Thanks.

A factory will need to be trued or "blueprinted" which costs money. The custom actions are generally smoother and able to handle stronger pressures. After an action is trued there is little difference in accuracy compared to a custom all else being equal. However there is little cost gained in the factory after buying a donor, then having it blueprinted when compared to a custom. If you are starting off of a previously owned rifle then you save money.

I have two semi customs built off of Remington actions. The first I bought and hunted with as a factory for a couple years before having it worked over by Rbros rifles. The second Travis the owner of Rbros sold to me because he knew I was looking for a 6.5 and one of his customers was selling his used rbros at a pretty good savings to me. I love them both but if I was starting a custom build from scratch I'd use a custom action.

It affects accuracy by how well it lines everything up and holds it all straight during the shot and the tighter tolerances allow more precise repetition of the shot sequence. Uneven lug contact allows for shifts from shot to shot in how the bullet engages the lands. Really squared up bolt , action , and barrel combined with really straight ammo means the bullet enters the bore straight and exits without a wobble .

A properly trued factory action will be just as accurate as a custom action if both a trued. More important is the chambering job and how well that is cut. If you want a fluted bolt, custom bolt knob and handle, side bolt release and other things then a custom action is the way to go.
