How do you carry with a backpack on

With my daypack, my Glock 20 fits on my hip easily with the pack waist belt under the pistol. With my hauling packs, I carry it attached to the pack waist belt.

Kevin, I contacted Bianchi and they said that holster will not fit a Ruger Alaskan. They may be going off some model chart and not have actually tried it. How much "extra" room do you have with your 329? Obviously length is not the issue, but the Ruger AK .454 frame and handle is a good bit wider and bulkier, fatter if you will. I'm wondering if I could make it work, or somehow sew in some extra material if I had to. I've also contacted 1/2 dozen custom holster manufacturers and no one will build me a holster with a clip or similar quick detach method. Frustrating because the process you describe is exactly what I am trying to achieve.

View attachment 24599View attachment 24599Been going all thru this for my new Ruger Alaskan. I can't find what I want. I want a hip holster with a secure and fast clip attachment, ideally synthetic or some other non leather material. I want to be able to clip it on my pack belt and then easily detach and clip on my pants when I drop the pack. Something like the attached (or course this one won't fit my gun). I will gladly purchase a Pope and Young or NRA membership for anyone who finds me one for a Ruger AK 454.

Try the bladetech with tek-lok. They show a model for the Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan. Not sure if that is what you need, but I'd give them a call. I had the same trouble looking for a holster for my S&W 329PD with the same features you want. Have been very happy with my blade tech.

The funny thing is that I don't even recall how I sized my gun to that holster. I think a friend who uses the same rig told me about it. I bought my holster via the auction and never looked back. I seem to recall the Smith fitting very snugly at first, but the holster has relaxed a bit and now holds the gun comfortably. I'm not telling you what you should do, but what I would do is simply buy the holster from a source which allows returns. Try it and see if it fits. If it doesn't...no harm, no foul. The two critical dimensions are vertical (trigger guard to top of sight) and cylinder width.

Thanks. Is it kydex? I dont have any experience with that material. Is it noisy? Explain to me what Tek lock attachement is. I didn't see a description on thier site. Could you pop off the holster quickly from a pack belt and clip it on my waist belt? What holds the gun inside the holster? I don't see a hammer strap or similar. Thanks.

My co-workers and I have tried a bunch over the years and chest holster is hard to beat with a pack on. The problem is that the retention systems on most of them are S-L-O-W. Trying to quickly defeat a side lock buckle in a hurry sucks! A guy I work with came up with this custom deal a few years ago. It's a Diamond D harness with a holster bolted to a stiffened leather platform. Gun drops right into your hand and the draw is fast and smooth. We built several replicas, and it's thus far been un-beatable for carrying Glock/XD pattern handguns in the field.

Should be pretty straight forward, blackhawk holster with the bolt pattern drilled out into the leather. Add a few washers when bolting together and it should be solid. I like my blackhawk with strike plate mount on my pack belt.

Brad, stop over and check mine out.

What worked out well for me was to use a galco ankle holster on my backpack waist belt. Since the ankle holster is Velcro it just affixed around the waist belt. I did have to put it on the opposite side so it is a 'cross draw' but it worked pretty well. I did loose one of my 'hip belt' pounches but no biggie for me. Once the waist belt was tight around my waist I didn't have any fear of it coming off.

*edited* I carry a sub compact Glock while hiking/hunting this way. Yes I know it'll probably just piss off a bear though.

I'm not the leather guy (my dad built this one), but the platform is constructed from doubled leather with a piece of thin plastic (rubbermaid container lid) in between to make a solid base for the screws. Otherwise, the only trick is sewing plastic D rings in the correct locations for the harness.

I believe we bought the harnesses direct from Diamond D for $35. They work well.

My only issue with a chest mount is my bino harness is always there.

I rarely hunt while wearing a handgun, so mostly a non-issue for me and I have it adjusted high and center. However it can also be easily adjusted to ride lower and off to the support side if you have something on your chest. My partner uses a chest pack and carries his gun that way.

Its some sort of composite, but much thicker than the kydex holsters you have probably seen. The material is formed to fit the pistol and is about 1/8" thick all around. If I was at home, I'd take some pictures. The tek-lok attachment allows you to pop it on and off quickly from your pack belt to gun belt etc. Fits up to a 2" belt I think. Hard to explain, but works really well and is secure when locked. They are a retention style holster with an adjustable tension screw so you can set the amount of force needed to pull the firearm out of the holster. I have mine set so you could shake the holster upside down violently and it won't come out, but still fairly easy for me to draw the gun. Been using it for about a year now and have not had any problems.
