How do you all carry your gun with the pack on your backs?

Another way to use the Gunbearer is to pull the cradle forward, shorten, and wear the rifle cross-chest behind the sternum strap....

squeezing the buckle is almost as fast as yanking the quick release...

Here's a few pics of what I do since I didn't explain it very well. I typically attach the buckle to my belt a lot further forward with the strap behind my belt pouch. That puts the gun in a lot better position to grab without reaching behind you but Ive been bowhunting lately so I I just threw it on there for some pics and didn't want to fiddle with pulling the belt pouch off. It will work for any rifle. I just make the top loop smaller for my model 70 since just the barrel goes through it. Just hold the gun with your right hand and snap the buckle with your left and the rifle is free.

OP sounds like you need the stone glacier weapon sling. I've used it on EXO and KUIU but it will work on any pack with side compressions. Holds it right behind your shoulder and you have a ripcord to pull that releases it for use.

I like the kifaru gun bearer. I can get my rifle into shooting position quicker than if it was hanging from a sling on my shoulder

Thanks for the tip. I will take a look at it.

I do not understand why people don't carry with a round in the chamber while hunting. I carry a handgun every day, onein the pipe, when I bird hunt , one in the pipe, and as soon as I hit the mountain with my rifle, one in the pipe. I use a safety but do not rely on it. I follow the cardinal rules of gun safety especially about keeping the muzzle from pointing at anything your not willing to destroy, also keeping my finger off the bang switch until I'm on a target I'm willing to destroy.

Now if it's a day before opener and I'm hiking in then I probably won't chamber, or if I have harvested and packing out then I won't chamber, but active hunting then its in the pipe.

I use a sling and carry on the shoulder or in my hands with a back pack.
The mechanical safeties on modern carry handguns are drop safe and a lot more robust than the safety on most hunting firearms. Handguns are also carried in a holster that covers the trigger.

With that said I will certainly carry my AR or similar fighting rifle with a true military safety with a round in the chamber if the weapon is slung or carried in my hands but if it's strapped to my pack or if I'm carrying a "regular" hunting rifle I will have the mag in but an empty chamber due to the far less robust safeties inherent in their design.

For carry on my pack I picked up one of those badlands rifle pockets that straps to the side of my pack and I use the compression straps to hold it tight

I carry mine like so:

Out of the way while hiking thru the thick brush or up steep hills but still quick to access without taking the pack off.

Is this the case with all rifle brands (hunting)?

My understanding was that some - like Winchester and savage, block the firing pin as well as lock the trigger?

I use the safety but NEVER trust it. One should always be aware of where the muzzle is pointing. As i said when strapped to the pack my chamber is empty, but when active hunting i have a round in the chamber.

I use the Stone Glacier gun bearer\holder thingy. It is fast enough when you need it, and secure enough when you don't. Pretty sure you could use it on any rigid framed pack.

Luke I carry very similar when I'm using a DT bag.

I used the kifaru gun bearer this year on my mystery ranch. Best system I've ever used. I was so sick of my sling sliding off my shoulder because of my pack.

I ordered a Kifaru Gun Bearer last week but Kifaru was a little slow on the shipping. It just got picked up today by USPS and is going not going to make it in time for my trip this weekend. Looks like I'm going to be try some of these alternative methods.

Kifaru usually takes 4-7 days to ship in-stock stuff. If you need something sooner you can always call Frank and he'll get you taken care of. They got completely blown up with the black Friday sale, so it was crazy in there last week when I picked up my order. Frank's office was covered in boxes of orders he was filling.

I figured they might be a little behind with the sale. I am thankful for the discount they offered and I'm not complaining for sure, it's just that I've been rubbing it in my buddies face about them toting their rifles and I was going to be using my sweet new gun bearer lol. I'll put it to good use whenever the next trip comes around.
