How are the browning hells canyon rifles?

I have the Hells Canyon Speed in 300 WSM. Really like the rifle. <8lbs with a 4-16X44 Viper HSLR. I have a .300 WM build in progress, so the Hells Canyon might be back on the classifieds again. I'm in CA and was having issues developing a copper load for it, but finally found it some factory ammo that it likes and shooting sub-moa.

Up for discussion is my Browning X-Bolt Hell’s Canyon Speed in 300 WSM topped with a Vortex Viper HS LR 4-16X44 scope and Talley rings. I’ve hunted with it for 2 seasons, so scope has a small cosmetics that don’t show on pics as well as a gash on the side (see last pic), but hasn’t impacted...

I do not own one myself but have several buddies in WA, ID, MT and WY who have them. None has a .300 WM (mostly 6.5 CM, 6.5 PRC, .270 Win, .270 WSM, 7mm-08 and 7mm RM). Most are Hell's Canyon Speed models but the .270 WSM is a Hell's Canyon Long Range and one of the 6.5 PRCs is a Western Hunter.

All of these rifles are sub-MOA with factory ammo. About half are digesting hand-loads and are even better than that with their pet loads. These guys have made some very nice shots on game with their rifles and between them have a rather large pile of critters in the freezer. Some have done the spring mod to the trigger, some have not. All shoot great with or without it.

I really like the HCS model and have been wanting on ever since I handled my buddy's 6.5 Creedmoor version the first time. I put my first three shots with that rifle into a 1.3" group at 200 yards with factory 143 ELD-X, with the first two shots touching each other. I have since become enamored with the Western Hunter version for the adjustable cheek piece. If they offered it with a cerakoted barrel/action like the HCS, it would be my favorite.

I plan to get one or the other (or a Winchester Model 70 EW MB) in 6.8 Western somewhere down the line. I love these rifles.

I've got a Hell's Canyon Speed in 6.5 CM shooting 140 Bergers under .25 MOA, great rifles.

They are a great rifle. I have a HC LR in 300wm, shot my elk at 1105 yds this year, and have brought it out to a mile target shooting. Its heavy compared to the speed. Shoots 215 Bergers very well. I also did the trigger upgrade stated above.

how do you put in the new spring? I have no clue?

If you use the Mcarbo spring, they have a good YouTube video. It’s kind of a PITA to get the old one out, but not too bad.

ya i seen on u tube 2 different videos of how to loosen the spring on the rifles looked really easy so why would u need to put in a different like a Mcarbo?

They seem like great rifles….but WHY does Browning insist on carbon steel rifles…that they then ceracoat? That’s just illogical. The bore and action internals will still rust.


Ceracoating a carbon steel barrel is a false sense of security. Browning should do better for that price.

I agree in the Hells Canyon line and similar price point. It’s the only thing I don’t like about my speed is that it’s not stainless. You have to step up to the Pro line to get stainless.

I understand that but from the 2 videos i watched it has a spring u adjust to make it lighter on the rifles? I am asking i dont know but video showed he got it from 5pounds to 3.5

Correct. You can adjust it, but the mcarbo has less spring tension than the factory spring. I've never tested the pull on mine with a gauge, but it definitely made a noticable difference.

I have an HCS in 30-06. Wanted a great brush buster that is comfortable to carry and hits where I aim (that is asking a lot). I hunt a lot of dark timber/blowdown so the need for extended range was less important. Having said that, with 180 grain acubonds even I start to look like a half-decent marksman.

In short, I think that you really have to be looking to find something wrong with this platform…The trigger is an obvious weak point (but it’s not life or death at least for me) and I am not in love with the rubberized stock (again I’ll survive). However, for what is ultimately a factory gun I really think browning got it right. I will be buying another one for certain.
