Hornady A tip 166gr .284 load data?

These are BC kings and come with a hefty price. I am new to reloading in every way but I was wondering if anyone has experience yet with them. I am looking for a BC hard hitter for my custom 280AI. 24" C6 barrel, suppressed, blue printed rem 700 action, etc.... I have Nosler brass, CCI LR primers, RL22 and H4831sc on hand. I have a box of 162gr eldx so far, trying to acquire some 168 classic hunters also. If anyone has experience with the A tips let me know. Thanks!

No personal experience with the 166s. The 162eld-m has a similar BC and shoots really well over H4831sc and a CCI-200 in my 7saum (similar to 280AI). Price, availability and terminal performance considered, for hunting, you may want to stick with those ELDs or Bergers.

If you want high BC and have the mag room and proper barrel twist rate, the 180 class is the route to go for the 7mm. Just know it will recoil more.

Your 1-9” will run 180’s if it’s actually a “true” 1-9.. You will likely lose a bit of B.C. But trued up field data will tell you if there is an advantage to the 180’s over the 160 class VLD’s or not. Get out and shoot!

There are stability calculators online that will show you can stabilize up to 180’s in a 1:9 twist. Depending on elevation, you may be able to stabilize heavier bullets. I am shooting the 168 VLDH in mine. I think I am going to move to the 175gr elite hunter though.

My Cooper .280AI also has the 1 in 9 twist rate. It shoots very well with 160 gr Sierra GKs over 57.0 gr of IMR 4831. It also shoots 160 gr Accubonds well over 55.5 gr of IMR 4831, but not quite as good as the GKs. I got pressure signs sooner with the ABs, hence the lower charge. Also Nosler brass and CCI-200 primers. ABs are non-existant in today's market but the GKs are available from a number of vendors.
