Intersted in this pack for first bag purchase. Looks very versatile and can use the small bag as a day pack. Read some of the threads on here saying it isnt that great of a pack. Should I just save up and by more of a higher end pack like exo or stone glacier?

Honestly, my answer to this question will always be yes.

You can piece together a used setup from one of the "big name" companies (or mix and match bags and frames if you are feeling frisky) for not much more than the Horn Hunter costs and you'll likely be much happier.

It's just a super-heavy setup that, in my opinion, doesn't have anywhere near the hauling capabilities and comfort you get with a higher-end pack. I went a similar route with my first pack in an Eberlestock and it worked ok, but was not comfortable. When you have that sucker on your back for 10 days straight it can weigh on you....literally! That said, I certainly survived and had a great time, I just enjoyed my hunts MUCH more this year with my Kifaru.

I went through a phase of purchasing and trying a bunch of packs. Horn Hunter Full Curl, Kifaru Bikini, Kifaru Hunter Duplex, Exo 3500 and 5500, various Eberlestock packs and Badlands packs. Here was my synopsis. I wore the Horn Hunter for less than 1 hour and relisted it. It was crazy heavy compared to the other packs and stiff as a board. I did like its overall versatility, but that was it. It won't hold a candle to the Kifaru or Exo packs I tried.

Yeah like a lot of guys on here I tried badlands, horn hunter, tenzing, Kifaru, and exo and no matter what I do I keep finding myself back at Kifaru. I’ve always bought used and I scored a deal on one of Kifaru’s newer ultra lite frames that looks kinda like the bikini and decided this is ‘the one.’

But Kifaru and exo are head and shoulders above the others I’ve tried.

I haven't used it but that new Eberlestock M1 frame with the Molle cargo panel looks pretty slick. I think it's like $200. Couple that with a used Kifaru camp bag or a good dry bag and you will be set for well under what you would pay for the Full Curl

Haunt the classifieds here, you will find AWESOME deals from time to time....

I had one the last two years and just barely sold mine (my dad's is listed in the classifieds. Shameless plug).

I bought it initially because i really wasn't sure what style of hunting i was actually going to be doing most, and i didn't have the funds at the time to go all in on a high ender. Even used in the classifieds here, you cant find anything Exo, SG, Kifaru for under 400 bucks that i have seen.

The pack worked great for us for two years. Never had an issue with it. It has some great features i really liked. It is also a bit heavy. 9lbs i believe with the frame, small and large bags. Less with just the frame and small bag which is how i typically ran it. It does the job at a cheaper price point. Obviously I am upgrading now, so it didn't do everything i wanted, but for an entry level backpack i would take it over any of the Badlands, and probably most of the Eberlstock packs, just for its modularity.

If you have any other specific questions about the pack let me know!
