Homemade knives

Any of you guys into making your own knives? I’m a rookie at it but it’s a fun hobby. I’m just doing stock removal and basic heat treating with carbon steel for now using basic tools. There’s just something about using stuff that you make yourself. Here’s a couple I’ve made during this damn quarantine. The big one I made for my 10 yr old. He wanted a bushcraft type BFK (Big F$&ning knife) and I couldn’t say no. The other two I made for my oldest boy and hunting buddy.

Looks like solid work to me. I have done a bit of the same but i dont ever get them a nice as yours. They are pretty much all i use. Good heat treat and a good edge goes a long ways.

Good looking knives guys.

I used to make a few. Haven't for a while. These are blades I forged. The black one I made for my wife and now resides in the end table... you see how much she uses it, lol.
The two with hamon lines were Christmas gifts I made for my son and Son-in-law.

Nice work. I only assemble knives from blanks. I am still trying to get one right. I usually slip up and mess up the bolster or drill the pins off center. Sooner or later, I get one perfect. Fun hobby for when the weather is too bad for shooting.

What is your guys heat treatment regimen?
I make most of my knives out of 52100 which I get from worn out bearing races. For some reason I get a lot of pleasure out of making something useful out of someone else's junk.
After forge and grind work is done, I normalize the blade by heating the whole thing to non-magnetic and then allowing it to air cool.
For hardening, I heat just the edge of the blade with a torch to non-magnetic and quench in 120-40 degree canola oil. I've used Olive oil too and still do with some steels but seem to get better results in canola oil with 52100
I usually do 2 tempers in the oven at 425 degrees for 2 hours.

Have experimented with some multiple quench heat treats recently and gotten some good results. Ed Fowler wrote a book "Knife Talk" which I highly recommend to anyone interested in heat treating carbon steel blades. That's what got me started doing multiple quenches. I'm curious if anyone else here has experimented with it?

Of course anyone heat treating stainless needs a lot more temp control than a gas forge and a torch can provide!

How did you do the finish on the spine of the bigger knife?

I just scored a big bag of old new files. I have been blacksmithing for several years on and off. I’m kinda moody with it.
I plan to make several knives with those files.
