Put in the time and effort and got my caribou for the year. Earliest I’ve hunted and probably the earliest I ever will due to corresponding seasons. Was slow, caribou seemed to be stuck in their summer pattern, had to hunt some new areas but overall put in the time and effort and you will be rewarded.

It’s reallllly quiet right now. I’m actually sitting here near pump station 2 as I type this. I’ve seen 6 bou today. 4 cows and 2 calves. I have seen a couple nice racks being hauled in the back of some trucks. But not many. Maybe 2 or 3. There’s some Musk Ox roaming around as well. Yesterday was nasty weather and is supposed to turn again tomorrow, but today was absolutely fantastic.

Hmm, you think they moved through already or haven't filtered out of the high country yet?

I’ve heard reports of both. Some of my shop guys (in Deadhorse) say July is better, others say differently. I think it’s just all over the place.

I was there the first two weeks of Aug. I found the most reasonable answer to where the caribou were, was just scattered all over in their summer pattern still. Looking at recent outfitter pics/hunter experience and my experience, this theory seems to be the most logical spot on. I never once saw more than a cow and calf, two cows and a calf, bull and cow, or lone bull.

At the end of the day, caribou are gonna caribou and you just have to figure out how to be in front of them.

Truth.... I once witnessed 40 caribou run up a mountain, then run down the opposite side, ran around to where they first were, ran back up the mountain and then disappear to never be seen again. When we shot our animals and were hanging out at the tent we saw 4 bulls do something really weird, they walked up within 100 yards of the tent.....and laid down.

Just got back. Caribou are definitely few and far between. Slowest I have ever seen up there. A group of four of us went up and all got our caribou but it definitely took a lot of work.
