Hey y’all,
So back story, I have shot a ton of different handheld releases in the past, shooting my Stan Onnex thumb button exclusively for the past year. I am getting a case of target panic and excessive pin float the last 3ish or so months. Still shooting good groups 60-80yrds, 5-6” but that use to be my 100-120yrd 4 arrow group size on average. I shoot average 60 arrows a week year round if I account for the low volume in the winter with were I live at 10,500’. I am shooting a prime form, 76lb, 28” draw for reference. Nothing has changed arrow or bow wise. Now getting to my point. I picked up a Stan Onnex back tension as that has helped me in the past with other brands and even exclusively shooting only a back tension for 2 years in the past. I have allowed my self a few weeks to get back use to one mainly blank bailing and shooting at 20 yards to just build confidence and repeatability on my break. I am hitting roughly 2-3” low with my back tension compared to my thumb. I can switch back at hit 4 10’s with my thumb then next set be just 2-3” below. Any recommendations on why? The stand are identical shape and neck length by design.

I typically see windage variations switching release styles not elevation.

With a peep sight it’s usually a non issue with elevation, but maybe you are sighted in with your button and punching and anticipating the shot firing causing the issue?

If you shooting 6” groups at 100 go shoot some national tournaments or ASA and win some cash!

Having no problem with windage just elevation. I am thinking it may have to do with tension in my hand as the thumb is hanging and loose after I let off the safety on the tension and having to stay engaged on the button

Could be few different things. As long as you have good form and are anchoring the same. Sounds like you’re not relaxing into your shot. 1. Maybe its not breaking you may be pushing into your bow dropping the shot or 2. Your not relaxing pulling to hard into the back wall causing your bow to bounce and its breaking low. Or 3 Just have some TP and your focus to hard on trying to get shot to break and your holding low.

Just relax

Inconsistent high/low (do the same for windage issues) I pay attention to my anchor in relation to my head position (where nose is on string in this case). I purposely make changes and note the change in impacts until I find the issue with my anchor/face pressure.

Honestly I would stick with one release until you are consistent again, just to help identify the cause. You may hold them slightly different and it causes a minor change to your anchor.

You mentioned target panic and for me target panic = holding/shooting low. I can really focus and execute good shots, but the second I relax my groups will be low again.

CWilson, if you are in the Denver metro area, or can get here during business hours for Rocky Mtn Specialty Gear, go see Tom Clum, have him look at your form and give you a lesson.

Money well spent. I'll bet he can find the problem and help you fix it.

If your group size isn’t any different, I’d be pretty tempted to say who cares. The only thing I can think of would be your follow through. If you focus on the elbow of your release hand and where it goes after the back tension shot breaks, you may be pulling in a slightly upward motion thus forcing the string upward and putting the shot lower. Because a handheld release naturally has your elbow higher than your hand at anchor, pulling the elbow ‘straight back’ could cause this effect. Proper straight back of the HAND would actually be ‘down and away’ motion of your elbow. Over exaggerate this enough and you could get the opposite effect of pulling the string down and landing a shot high.
