Anyone seen this show "Alone"?

The premise is 10 men choose 10 items (besides the clothes on their back) and are each dropped off on a area of Vancouver Island in places where they can't encounter each other due to water. They film themselves and set trailcams up around their camps to film themselves in 3rd person. The goal is to see who can endure the longest amount of time (they were told to be prepared for up to 1 year), but they don't know when the other guys throw in the towel, so its entirely up to the individual. One guy didn't even last one night because he was so freaked out by the predators.

The first episode is up online here: http://www.history.com/shows/alone/...adf94cc462&s=undefined&f=undefined&free=false

Here are their individual gear lists -no firearms were allowed.

At least one of them brought a bow and arrows, most or all of them brought fishing rods and net. It seems to me that your ability to forage and set snares and traps would be your best bet for longterm survival. Its not near as hokey as the other History channel survival shows.

I have heard of this show, but not seen it. It's basically right in my back yard. I might have to break down and actually get cablevision to watch it. Maybe it's on Netflix. Just looking at the website, it looks like it's mostly on the north end of the island, which is certainly more remote than the southern end. I wonder what will happen if one of them actually shoots any wildlife, as there is nothing legal to hunt until august 20 (grouse) or 25 (deer and bear) ? And even then, none of them are resident, so they couldn't get a license anyway.

Exactly. If you could shoot, catch and trap all the game you needed Vacouver Isl may be one of the easiest places in N. America to survive for a year. Really the only tough part would be staying dry and not going crazy with the loneliness.

The first show reminded me of a the old Mike Tyson saying "Everyone has a plan until you get hit in the mouth" The one guy (a cop) had a bear come to his tent and he was done. "Im outta here jack !"

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I would need more than 10 items and more knowledge to have any chance at long term survival I think, but I find it interesting what 10 items people chose.

It is intesting that Dustin, chose a gill net and slingshot over a tarp, emergency rations, or even bow & arrows like some of the other contestants did. Some items like the gill net might help you survive long term, but you may not make it beyond the first couple of weeks in that climate without the tarp or emergency rations? Very interesting.

I also noticed not a single person chose a fire starter. Being they are in a rainforest I'd think a torch and a large Kifaru stove would be near the top of my list.

More power to them. I'm perfectly fine with all the modern conveniences that today's society offers.

I vote Joe is going to win this, I know he is a bushcraft guy from youtube, he plays with this stuff all the time.
I dont have television but occasionally watch items I like on the intrweb. This is still edited and sounds added in so its hard to watch but Ill be keeping up to see who makes it and how.

How do they supply up to a years worth of batteries and memory for the cameras without restocking along the way?

Likely prearranged drop off points on a weekly basis -maybe even every couple of days so that production can jump ahead on editing. -that's a lot of footage to go through.

I like how the guy who says "When instincts kick in, mine is definitely fight" is the first one to go home..."I knew there would be animals, but I didn't expect to be stalked." hahaha

Is a bear cub smelling your tent at night really being stalked?

The guy was not gonna make it anyway, but in all fairness he drew the location short straw. That sow and her cubs lived there, thy were not passing through. He probably would have had to deal with them the entire time he was there, he was toast the moment he saw the first sign. Also anybody with any common sense wouldn't camp on top of torn up fish heads.
