Hill People Gear Mountain Serape

I have one and like it. But, I do not think it is for everyone. It's kind of an in between item, if you have a full set of puffy gear then is it really needed. The flip side is if you don't have puffies then you could use the serape and also pack a lighter sleeping bag and use the serape as an additional blanket at night. Lots of options, and they are well made.

I have had one for a better part of 6 months now. I carry it in my EDC. Ive used it for Fall Camping, when traveling to other cities as my Hotel Bed cover. Ive also used it to beef up my warmth in my Western Mountaineer bag. Quality is great. and Ive never had any issues with it. Especially nice when getting up in the middle of the night to use the restroom and you dont want to slap on a coat. Fits perfectly in a Kifaru 3 string Stuff sack and it zips up to make a nice sleeping cover for added warmth. I wouldnt count on it for a main sleeping system though. Its made as a Ponch liner like the Woobie and Doobie from Kifaru.

Here is a great article comparing Kifaru Woobie to the Mountain Serape.

I guess it Depends on your climate.
I picked one up 3 months ago and used it 4 times already as my main sleeping bag.
I tested it one night at the trailhead with just shorts, t-shirt and a beanie, inside a USGI bivi on a sleep pad in 38f . it was cold and I woke up a few times but I wasn't shivering or hypothermic, but wouldn't say comfortable

for me 38f would be Do-able but not by choice

the rest of that weekend I slept in long johns under BDU pants and a TAD fleece hoodie (100wt) and was quite comfortable

Forgot to mention all the other nights were warmer between 47-53f just slept in light weight long tops & pants and was comfortable

For cooler weather somthing else would be more appropriate. but i despise mummy bags since i havent found a wide short one yet.
I'm built like a tuna can and dont need the height.

The serap is roomy in the footbox created by the zipper. since I usually use the "Ranger Taco" for 3 seasons it works well.

The HPG serape is basically a suped-up Poncho liner with better materials. i like it

I like both and my kids don't have to fight over them. Serape is heavy but built like a tank. I doubt even Ryan Avery could easily hurt it:-)

I take mine on every hunting trip where I want to take a stand or there is a chance of rain. One of the best purchases I have ever made.

I have one and it's one of the best pieces of gear I have. For me, it's very warm and will be in my pack while hunting in case I decide to camp away from base camp. It works great as a stand alone bag or a supplement to my sleeping bag. I've worn it a couple times as a poncho in the mornings until it warms up though I'm not a fan of the great coat mode. I need to buy one for my wife before she steals mine.
