If a national forest hiking trail starts on natl forest and cuts across about 200 acres of private property then goes back to natl forest land is it ok to cross private as long as you stay on the trail? No I'm not gonna hunt or camp on the private land but if able to cutting across could shave some serious steps

There are lots of trails that cross private land. Many land holdings inside National Forest boundaries have reciprocal easements that allow the public to use a trail in exchange for the private landowner to use public land to access their private holdings.

There are too many variables to know what you are dealing with based on a general foru post. A little research should get you an answer pretty quickly. I would start with a call to the locals ranger station. They will likely know the answer. If you have to step it up, go the the county recorders office and pull the deed. Any easement shouLtd be recorded.

I will give the ranger station a call

How do you know (or why do you think) it cuts onto private? If it's posted, that's way different then your GPS/Maps showing you it's on private...
