Hiking Machu Pichu

If you have issues with altitude or even think you may have issues, DO NOT rely on coca leaves, tea, candies or anything else that is offered with coca. Just go to your doc and get some meds to take with you.

Consider it insurance, better to have it and not need….

As someone else mentioned, the Salkantay Trek takes you up over the Salkantay Pass at 15,200 feet, which is much different and harder than the traditional Inca Trail hike.

Salkantay Trekking does an Inca Trail package too, just not as familiar with that.

Hello all,

i'm planning on hiking the Inca Trail up to Machu Pichu in peru next year, looking for a company that does that, i already have a couple of companies but don't know them if anybody that did it i will love to hear their input and also reccomend a company.

thank you so much.
If you’ve not booked this yet, I’d strongly suggest Salkantay trekking… they book everything and are now locally owned.. we booked a salkantay pass trek as well as the Inca trail and a onsite full tour of machu pichu … all under $1,000 for six days of hiking with phenomenal accommodations.. you will only have to deal with your airfare and stay before the trek.. they will pick you up at th red hotel and drop you back off when your trek is over.. class A company.. the Rumi puku is 20 min from Cusco airport and will pick you up.. $86 per night. You’ll have to take a 10min walk to the trekking company the night before for orientation…

hey thank you for your help, i already booked with Sam Travel Peru also locally owned , i did this in november because the permits for the inca trail came out in november for my trip in june, hotels i did my self.
Thank you, really appreciate you reaching out.

I second what 17Hunter said, if you get altitude sickness the coca leaf mate will not help you at all. I had it in La Paz because I didn't aclimate and ran around and worked out on my first day of arrival. Embassy Doc put me on Diamox and that kept the altitude sickness at bay. Mate de Coca (tea) did nothing to alleviate me headache.

For anyone else planning to do this, you can buy diomox over the counter at any of the Peruvian pharmacies.. I personally never have issues but my wife does.. we flew into Cusco and were only there a few hours before wtarting
