this is a tricky question. I have a small child so all my guns but one are in the safe. my 1911 is for home defense. the tricky part is this... in a robbery is it safe if im not home? currently im using a false face clock in my bedroom. I know most on here are aware of these,(i dont know any of you guys but i trust you all;)
). anyone else? or are these so commonplace that they are a bad idea? any other ideas?

Use a small quick access pistol safe by your bed. Best if the safe is secured down, so it can't walk off.

+1
My safe has a key pad with a 4 digit code. Access is quick, but my sidearm is completely out of reach of the kids and the safe is bolted down to a shelf in my closet so walking off would be difficult.

Mine is simply lying flat on its side on the highest shelf in a bedroom cabinet. Unless an intruder is 7 feet tall and can see it, they likely wouldn't look there for anything valuable. It's out of reach of small hands and unless you know it's there it's completely hidden.

It's not my most valuable weapon and I guess if it did get swiped, at least we weren't in the house when it fell into the wrong hands. It's just stuff in the grand scheme.

I have 4 small children. All of my guns are locked up in the basement. I don't really worry about having a self defense weapon at hand.

your right BP Hunter, when im home its in my room, easy reach. my safe is in the back of the house in a spare room and the only spot in the house with concrete floors.so of course its set there. its a long windey run through the house to get there is all. just asking for safe options for the one "satellite" gun

Yup. All mine locked up and/but I don't have children. If you wanted it accessible I'd imagine the drawer safe (bolted) with code is a good setup.

I don't have anyone in my home that can't be trusted with a handgun at the moment but I wear my handgun until I go to bed.
When I retire for the evening I place the handgun between the mattress and box spring. When I awaken I don my pants and also don my gun.
If I were you I'd be looking at a small safe next to, or under, the bed to hold your firearm. If it has a key feature I would place the key in the lock at night and remove it in the morning.

I'm actually looking to do the small safe next to the bed, there are ones that are biometric for fast silent access. I just recently abandoned the high shelf because my boy is getting into more and more. Not more than a day or two later he put his Lego's away on that very same shelf, after climbing on a bench. It weirds the wife out when I have my carry pistol on in the house all day, so I have a small safe in the closet, but I find that with it less accessible, I leave the house without it more frequently. My biggest point is I have to lock it up when it's not on my waist, the stories of children shot terrify me. I played with a lot of loaded guns growing up that I wasn't supposed to touch. If I saw someone use a clock like your talking about when I was a kid, that would have intrigued me, and I probably would've checked out that pistol. Thank god nothing ever happened to me or most of my childhood buddies. IMHO

Gun Vault
is a must if you have kids
fast access with 4 buttons (forget biometric wont always work if hands are sweaty or bloody)
For under a hundred your kids can be safe and you wont go to jail for having a unsecured weapon
Your kids might know not to touch your firearm but what about there friends ( accidents happen)

I second this. I have 2 kids at home and I feel that it is my obligation as a responsible gun owner to have each and every gun in the house secured. I would prefer a shotgun in the bedroom but since I don't have a good, secure, and safe way to keep it there, it has found a home in the main safe. I use a 4 button safe mounted to wall studs that secures my XDM. It's a slight sacrifice in my opinion but knowing that my kids or their friends cannot access a loaded gun is worth it. I will raise my kids right, to resect guns as I was, but they are curious minds that don't understand consequences fully.

I have a small safe on my nightstand, has the fingerprint scanner, but can be opened with 4 digit code as well.

I have never really given self defense in my home much thought. Although I have guns and ammo in the house, neither are quickly accessible.

Well, whatever way or location you choose to go, a home defense weapon won't do any good whatsoever if you can't access it quickly.
I don't have any kids around the house but there is a firearm of some sort at every door, under my "man chair" and several in the bedroom.
It's easy if you don't have children or undesirables around the house----but I would think a quick access safe somewhere in the house AND the bedroom would be the way to go. I just don't worry about thefts but I'm out in the country which is way different than being in the hood.

The best thing you can do to keep your kids safe is educate them. Teach them the rules of gun safety and how to handle a weapon. You also need to take away the mystic of guns make it so your son sees a gun as just another tool.

when my wife and I started dating her son would come over and he was about 4 at that time. When they both started sleeping over regularly I brought Jimmy into the bedroom unloaded all of my guns and I let him feel handle and rack the slides etc. I explained to him that guns can be very dangerous if you used wrong but they can be a lot of fun and useful tools when used correctly.

I told Jimmy if he ever wants to see or hold any of my guns all he had to do was ask and he could.

Jimmy is now 9 and has 2 guns of his own and he is extremely safe with them.

I wear a gun to work everyday and carry one just about all the time. Due to this Jimmy sees guns as a dangerous tool and they are not taboo at all.
