Hi,

In the process of getting myself rigged with backpacking gear for next year when I found this site ... been soaking up the wealth of info for the past week and decided to join.

I live in the tropical north of Australia and mainly bowhunt Waterbuff ... we normally take the 4x4 and setup camp in very remote areas (Arnhemland) that serve as base camp and typically do day trips or use the 4x4 to get close to specific areas for walk and stalk hunts. Next year I want to do a 5-7 day backpack hunt from the base camp, hence my interest in backpacking gear

Cheers,
Eugene

Welcome ! Nice buffalo . Are the Aussie buffalo as dangerous as the African cape buffalo ? He looks like he could stomp you into a mud hole !

Thanks for the welcomes!

Shrek: I was born and bred in South Africa/Namibia (lived there for 40 years before immigrating to Aus 6 years ago) so I am well aware of the Cape Buff's reputation and know people that have taken them by bow. Although I have been close to them in the wild, I have never had the opportunity to hunt them. They are definitely a formidable sight when close. I cannot from personal experience comment on their aggressiveness compared to Aus Buff.

I have been around +100 Aus Buff bow kills. They have very good eye sight and smell. In general I do not think they are overly aggressive, however we have had some close encounters with wounded buff, cows with young ones and some curious bulls "stalking" you. e.g. Approx 8 ago weeks we went hunting and a buddy of mine was very lucky to get away after he shot a cow and she bellowed whilst on the ground and a nearby bull came charging to assist her ... the bull charged over small trees and scrubs to get to my buddy ... luckily he was quick enough to get into a substantial tree, someone else had to finish off the bull as he did not want to leave the cow. Another example was a bull that simply walked up to me from 80 yards away (actually happened more than once) ... I made some noise and waved my hands but he simply had that nose-in-the-air stare and increased his pace ... I moved next to a big tree, ranged a bush 20 yards in front of me ... waited for him and frontal arrowed him .. he then deviated and died approx 50m further

Must admit I am more nervous hunting scrubb-bulls as they are more unpredictable and if you follow up a wounded one, take care. (below pic of scrubber)

Cheers
