Here we ago again... .223 bullet selection given following parameters.

Really just trying to get a pulse for preference on the following two given the parameters above:

1. Federal Fusion 62 grain
2. Barnes TSX 55 graiin
I have killed a small handful of deer with Barnes X/TSX/etc over the years and if you offered me a choice between pretty much any lead-core bullet on the market, and a Barnes TSX, I'm taking the lead core every time.

@Panhandler80 Ammoseek is where i look for 77TMK ammo if you change your mind, or are interested. Just make sure you put in 5.56X45mm instead of 223
Yeah. I use ammoseek a lot. Given my tendency to be adverse to outside-the-box concepts, I’m sure you won’t be surprised when I say that I’d prefer to avoid 5.56, even r though so many claim there’s no issue in modern bolt gun.

I’ve only seen 3 white tail shot with Federal Fusion 223. So I don’t have the experience of field dissecting 69 different animals. Took a few buddies hunting in college and that’s what they used out of a 16” gas gun.

It is one of the projectiles I keep on hand and loaded.

Then you are limiting yourself and might as well use a 300wm (that last part was sarcasm).

Gold dot - LE branded line
Fusion - commercial line
Same bullet.

I wouldn’t bother with the tsx.

Since you only want 223 labeled factory ammo buy stock in the fusion/gold dot line and go shoot. You will kill plenty and your boy won’t care one bit what ammo he’s shooting.

For the distances a little kid is going to be shooting little deer the plain old Hornady 55gr SP is an excellent choice. They’re labeled a varmint bullet but actually penetrate well at 223 speeds. I’ve killed a bunch of pigs of all sizes with them and always keep a few boxes on the reloading bench for utility ammo. I even killed a couple cow elk with them one year, one per customer easy peasy.

Ive used the 77TMK extensively and it’s a great bullet. But for the use case you describe you’re way overthinking this and there’s likely more stuff that will work than won’t.

The Hornady Match comes loaded as 223 Rem with the 73 ELDM.

There’s zero reason to avoid 5.56 in a bolt gun, unless your firing pin has a hard time with the harder military primers.

“LE line” - what’s this?

Thanks everybody. Yet another dead horse. Will pick up / get some options on order today. Will be able to pick up supressor and rifle next Wednesday
Get some blasting ammo while you’re at it so you’re not spending a fortune teaching your son on the hunting ammo. When it gets closer to Fall, get him all dialed into the hunting ammo.

That's the plan! Rifle came in yesterday. Still waiting on Form 4 (electronic) to be approved, but should be able to pick both up on Wednesday.
