I went archery elk hunting for the first time last week OTC Colorado. We hunted hard for 5 days but no luck. I got home and picked up my 5 year old daughter from school and she hugged me then asked, "Daddy, did you catch an elk???" I had to say no and she balled her eyes out the car ride home that I could not bring home fresh elk meat. Not going to lie, it hit pretty hard in a weird primal way that as a man I failed a hunt and my daughter was disappointed. Luckily we stopped at the store and I got her a Venison bar and she was ok...

My family has been eating elk pretty steady the last few years, and this year I didn't get an elk. My daughter (4) went through all the stages of grief, starting with denial. When she was experiencing anger, I felt that, quite personally.

Pro tip:
When I get invited to help spot a BOAL and then carry a BOAL on a baby's first elk hunt, I come bearing gifts!
(Also it is well established @Ucsdryder is allergic to making steel sharp)

The Mule Team is always a good gift.

Very interesting thread, and good luck to the wife Ucsdryder. My buddies wife has been there and done that a couple of times while she was pregnant. I think she planned it that way so she didn't have to participate in the pack out.

Thread hijacked by pregnancy talk. Reminds me of a you tube video “how is pregnant formed”. Great stuff

Pull the goalie June 1st. Put the goalie back in the net October 1st. It has worked well for me lol.
Hell I only run the bulls for 60 days and that's to cover 50 cows a piece....

On second thought, Is it wise to be making cow comparisons? Lo Siento

Not a good phone scope but once he hit the sun he has good whales. then he ran off as 2 knuckle heads drove their atv to the mouth of the creek with the thermals going down.

Any updates on the hunt so far?
We found lots of elk! @sndmn11 was ready to cut and pack, but we never found the bull she shot. We were camped and hunting north of 12000 feet and it was hard on both of us, especially her! She shot a bull the 2nd morning, shot sounded good, blood trail was strong but he never slowed down, never bedded and kept going up hill for a mile until we lost the blood. She made the decision to punch her tag and call it a hunt. It was a hell of a spot to hunt elk and I hope to go back again some day! The bull in the post a couple up with the biggest we saw, I think he was in that 320-330 range. We probably saw 200-250 total elk in 4 days.
