I thought I had most of my hunt planned, but recently found out you can't cross onto public lands via connecting corners. I'm not looking for anybody's honey holes or anything like that, but I'm having trouble finding alternate spots. I have onx maps, a current forest trail map, and google earth. My trouble seems to be finding decent looking spots that are much more than a mile off of trails. I was hoping to pack in a few miles and start from there. Was planning on hunting west of highway 89. Can anyone tell me if this is just the reality of the little belts as far as tons of trails and difficulty getting remote? As stated before I am not looking for anyone's specific spots. Thanks for any advice.

Let me first start off by saying that I'll be chasing elk for the first time this October in SW Montana. Of everything I've read, and I've read a ton, it's all about getting a mile away from roads. Most people will hunt within a mile of a road, or place where they can ride their 4 wheelers. If you've got the FS trail map it should have areas that are marked for road closures. Either way, good luck.

Little Belts are far from remote, but there is a reason they are known as the elk factory. Drive, park, hike, repeat as necessary. 1/2 mile from the road is a long way there.

I am headed to little belts this week. I am headed to east of 89. I have also found that getting away from the road or any trails any long difference is difficult. I did some scouting be of Neihart and saw a lot of elk sign and found it was quiet remote. That address is my last resort area.

Good luck hunting.

Thanks for the responses, I just didn't want to be wasting my time looking for something that's not possible

"Most" of the mountains in Montana will have roads within a mile or two of virtually every spot you might want to hunt. There are logging roads everywhere. The trick is finding those that are not heavily used. Being near a road is not usually a big deal if it's only traveled once or twice a week. FWIW.

If you really wanted to get away from the roads, you could always hike into the Bob Marshall.

Just my 2 cents and worth the price charged.
