Hey guys, I have been asking about tipis tarps and shelters. I am looking to make a basecamp, spike camp setup. One comfortable and the other smaller. I have something similar to a supertarp already. It would make a comfortable basecamp, or could be used as the spike camp either way. I am considering these 3-

SO Silvertip
27oz / Just under 9' hex shape / 57" high / 275$
Stove capable
Silvertip Ultralight two person Tipi

TiGoat Vertex 5
21oz / about 9.75' x 8.5' oval shape / 60" high / 255$
Stove capable
TiGoat Vertex5

Bearpaw Luna 2 (silnylon)
21oz / about 8.75' x 5.25' rectangle / 58" high / 260$
Product Luna 2 Page

The Silvertip seems awesome for a basecamp but doable for a spike camp too. heaviest, but still light. Seems doable with 2 guys and a stove.

The Luna 2 is the same weight as the Vertex 5 for about half the size. I dont mind the size, but think it should be lighter. I do like the efficient rectangle shape though. Seems aweful small for a stove.

The TiGoat might be my favorite so far. The size seems good for 1 guy basecamp, or small enough for a bivy without needing a lot of flat ground. And the weight seems killer but I think it is a lighter material. However, I dont know if it really matters. Seems like a good one guy/stove size.

Any thoughts to narrow this down?

I have a vertex, used it a couple nights whitetail hunting. Can't comment on the others. It's a great shelter, I bought it used, it came with the aluminum and carbon stakes, unless you are going to camp in different kinds of places than I do, you will want replace them with some MSR Groundhogs which will increase the weight a little. It stood up to some pretty good Eastern Colorado winds. It's definitely going to be my solo elk hunting shelter

I looked at that one and actually kind of like it. But it's 100 bucks more and I need to stay under 300 bucks. My gear fund this year is about out.

Thanks, do you feel like it's a sweet spot size-wise for one guy? How about 2?

I feel like it would be doable with two people and a stove, it would be super tight for that though and a great deal of caution would have to be taken around the stove. Without a stove, with two people you could sleep fine and probably get your gear in also but it would be very tight on a rainy day but OK to just crash for the night.

Look at Jimmys tarp new Granite mountain ... says it's a 2 man with a stove @13 oz for $189 for the next month , he's on Facebook and ebay

I think l like the granite mountain but l cant find any kind of spec sheet anywhere. Im still not really sure of the shape even lol. Is there a real website?

But this brings up a larger question. I like tarps, but l dont need sun protection. Is there any reason l should consider them over a tipi?

Im in rainy wa so l like the taller shelters where you dont have to get soaked on your knees getting in.
