I am looking for some advice from the experts on this forum. I have a Sako Finnlight in .308. I currently have a Leupold VX 2 3x9x40 on it, and am looking to upgrade for an upcoming Alaska Dall Sheep hunt. I am willing to spend the money to be confident out to 300+ in various light conditions.

I have killed several rams with that same scope. With a cloud free sky, there is enough light to shoot at midnight even in the Brooks range. That said I have upgraded all my sheep rigs to Swaro Z5s, but the Z3s are great glass and I only see a slight improvement with the Z5.

So use the Luppy if you want, or use this opportunity to upgrade to a Swaro. I will only say, that since I started using swaro glass, nothing else has left my gun safe.

Good Luck!!

Stid hunts a whole lot more than most of us so I'd put a lot of credence in his opinions - THAT said, I've always been a Leupold man for previously stated reasons, though I've not purchased one yet (but will soon) the new VX3i line sounds promising and my sons both have Z5's on their main rifles

Swaro fan here too. Once I bought one and it led to a second and then a third and.......................

No going back.

If you can't see it clearly, you can't hit it!

There are so many good scopes out there these days. Leupold VX3- 2.5-8x would be worth looking at, the 3-9x Swaro Z3, even a FXIII 6x42 fixed is a great scope. You'll run out of range with the 308 before you run out of scope in the 3-9x class. Sheep hunting isn't particularly challenging for any decent scope- typically good light- no dark timber and last light is well after midnight and first light is before 5AM.

But...what is the rest of your equipment looking like? If you aren't packing good grade binos and a spotter, best grade boots, packs, rainwear... then spend that money first.

I've never seen a hunt fail from an inadequate scope but bad boots, tents and rain gear have ruined a pile of them

IF the 3-9 is a recent model, it will fill the ticket. As said before, I would look at other gear, if needed, before I would be concerned about upgrading the rifle scope. I personally use the VX3 3.5-10X on my primary hunting rifle and I would not have any concern shooting sheep to 400 yards with it. Just spend some time to get really familiar with the rifle (trigger especially) and know the ballistics of the bullet you are using. Last but not least, get in shape and have boots that fit and are broke in.

Leupold VX3 CDS 4.5X14 has been an awesome scope for the price. I never had the turret custom cut and just run an MOA dope chart. Have shot from 30yds out to 1100yds with this set up. Obviously not the ideal scope for long range but its lightweight and compact. Only downfall to the CDS series is no zero stop at least on my model there isn't...
