Here's my dilemma. I want a lighter weight tripod with pan head. I really like the Vortex Summit SS-P due to its weight and compactness. This will be a tripod used to glass with 10x and some DSLR use so I don't need a heavier sturdier tripod for a large spotter.

The problem I have with is the SS-P is I hate their 3 way pan head. The knob that comes off the panhead controls the vertical and horizontal panning. This is frustrating for me when I glass. The manfrotto tripod I use the handle that comes off the head just controls the vertical panning and then there is a twist knob that controls horizontal panning. This allows me to lock the vertical pan but allows the horizontal to move freely. With the vortex I always have to hold the handle to keep the binos steady vertically if I want to pan. Hopefully I am making sense.

Is there a head out there like the manfrotto I am using that will fit on the vortex?

This looks like the manfrotto I use but its almost as much as the tripod and weighs almost a pound and a half. There has to be a cheaper lighter weight option or is there not?

If you can remove the center column I would just look at replacing that with one that has a 3/8 or 1/4 screw. Pretty sure you can buy them from bh whats the diameter?

Slik 707e head operates the way you like. It's not that light though and is rated at 8 lbs so over kill for bino but is great for grid glassing
